Amateur career

Tony Yoka, who from the age of 16 was looked after by the Cuban coach Luis Mariano Gonzales and from 2009 regularly spent training periods on the Caribbean island, won the French junior championship in 2008 and the French youth championship in 2009. In addition, he won a bronze medal at the European Youth Championships in Szczecin in August 2009 and the silver medal at the World Youth Championships in Baku in April 2010 . In August 2010 he won the gold medal at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore .

In the elite class (adults) he became French champion in 2012 and 2014, achieved second place in the European Olympic qualification in 2012 in Trabzon (final defeat against Magomed Omarow ) and in the same year took part in the Summer Olympics in London , where he, however with a narrow auxiliary point rating (16: 16+) was eliminated in the first fight against the Canadian Simon Kean .

At the World Championships in 2011 and 2013 he was defeated in the preliminary rounds against Erislandy Savón and Roberto Cammarelle . He lost to the latter in the round of 16 at the European Championships in 2011. At the Chemistry Cup 2014, he was eliminated in the semifinals against the German starter Florian Schulz with 1: 2 on points and won bronze. He won another bronze medal at the 2014 EU Championships in Sofia .

In 2009 he also won the Vojvodanske Glove Tournament in Serbia and the Agalarow Tournament in Azerbaijan, as well as the Brandenburg Cup in Germany in 2010 , the 4-Nations Tournament in France in 2012 and the 3-Nations Tournament in France in 2013 . In 2015 he won a bronze medal at the European Games in Baku .

At the 2015 World Championships in Doha , he won the gold medal. He beat Wang Zhibao, Filip Hrgović , Joseph Joyce and Iwan Dytschko on the way to the title . Yoka thus qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games . He could also finish this with the gold medal after defeating Clayton Laurent , Hussein Iashaish , Filip Hrgović and Joseph Joyce. It was the first Olympic gold medal by a French boxer since the 2000 Summer Games. Two days earlier, his girlfriend Estelle Mosselly had also won gold in the weight class under 60 kilograms.

Professional career

After his Olympic victory, he switched to the professional camp. In January 2017, the French pay broadcaster Canal + secured the transmission rights to Yoka's fights for four years. He chose Virgil Hunter as his coach and was preparing for his professional debut in San Francisco . In his first fight on June 2, 2017 in the Paris "Palais des Sports de la Porte Versailles", Yoka defeated the American Travis Clark by knocking out in the second round.

Since Yoka violated the anti-doping regulations three times within a period of less than a year (between July 2016 and July 2017) and missed three doping tests or violated the obligation to provide information about his whereabouts, he was informed by the Anti-Doping Agency in July 2018. France agency closed until July 2019. In August 2018, the judgment was upheld by the Supreme Administrative Court ( Conseil d'État ).
