Giorgi Kandelaki ( Georgian გიორგი კანდელაკი; born April 10, 1974 in Gori , Georgian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Georgian heavyweight boxer .

amateur

Kandelaki won the Junior World Championship in Montreal in 1992 and the European Heavyweight Championship in Bursa in 1993 (up to 91 kg). At the World Championships held in Tampere in the same year , he beat Bert Teuchert , among others, and advanced to the final, but did not appear in the final fight against Félix Savón and thus took second place.

At the 1994 World Cup tournament in Bangkok he reached a third place after a semi-final defeat against Savón. In the previous fight he had defeated the Nigerian Friday Ahunanya. At the 1995 World Championships in Berlin , he was eliminated in the quarterfinals after another loss to Savón without a fight.

He took part in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , where he beat Wojciech Bartnik, among others, then lost again on points against Félix Savón in the quarterfinals. At the European Championships in Vejle , Denmark , he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Christophe Mendy.

At his third world championships in 1997 in Budapest , he competed in the super heavyweight division, was able to prevail against the German representative Vitali Boot , Jean-Francois Bergeron, Sjarhej Lyachowitsch and, not without controversy, in the final against the Cuban Alexis Rubalcaba and became amateur world champion in the highest weight class .

professional

In 1998 Kandelaki began his professional career in the UK at Panix Promotions, where Lennox Lewis and Luan Krasniqi were also under contract at the beginning of their careers. But he could not convince despite victories against nameless opponents. In 2002 he won the insignificant WBU title. In 2003 he ended his career undefeated after an eye injury.

After his active career he founded the national professional boxing association of Georgia and acts as its president.
