Giacomo di Segni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giacomo di Segni (born November 30, 1919 in Rome , † 1995 ) was an Italian boxer . He was European amateurs champion in 1949 in the light heavyweight division and in 1951 in the heavyweight division .

Career

Giacomo di Segni, who studied art in Rome, was already in his mid-twenties when he rose to the national and shortly thereafter to the international amateur boxer elite. Nothing is known about the beginning of his career as a boxer. He was six feet tall and weighed around 80 kg throughout his boxing career. This enabled him to box in both light heavyweight and heavyweight division. As a heavyweight, however, he had to accept major weight disadvantages compared to most of his rivals, which he was able to compensate for in part with his speed.

The first result known from him was a point victory in the light heavyweight division over the Irish T. Troy in January 1947 on the occasion of an international match between Ireland and Italy in Dublin. In May 1949, again in Dublin, he took part in the European boxing championship for the first time. He started again in the light heavyweight division, but lost in the round of 16 against Otto (Ota) Rademacher from Czechoslovakia on points and thus finished 9th.

In 1948 he started for Italy at the Olympic Games in London. He came there in the light heavyweight division to a point win over Eskandar Shoora Osipoff, Ireland, but lost in the quarterfinals against Donald Scott from Great Britain on points and thus reached a 5th place.

In June 1949 Giacomo di Segni won the European title for the first time in Oslo. He defeated it in the light heavyweight Milos Lazarevic, Yugoslavia, Alan Larsen, Norway, Emile Mertens, Belgium and Otto Rademacher each on points. In 1950 there were no international championships. But Giacomo di Segni was in a European selection that fought two comparative matches against the United States in Chicago and Washington in April 1950. Fighting each in the light heavyweight division, he lost in Chicago to Herber Moore on points and defeated Eldridge Thompson on points in Washington.

At the European Championships in Milan in 1951, he competed in the heavyweight division. He won there over Hans Hofstätter, Austria, Antoni Goscianski, Poland, Jan Dyckman, Netherlands and Edgar Gorgas , Germany, each on points and thus won the European title for the second time. In October 1951 Giacomo di Segni also won the Mediterranean Games in Alexandria. He defeated it in the final of the heavyweight Ahmed el-Minabawi from Egypt.

In 1952 he started again at the Olympic Games. In Helsinki he represented the Italian colors in the heavyweight division, first winning over Jim Saunders, Canada, but lost in the quarterfinals to the outstanding boxer in this weight class Ed Sanders from the United States by knockout in the 3rd round. Like four years ago, he finished 5th.

Then Giacomo di Segni ended his career as a boxer without ever having become a professional boxer.

After boxing

From 1954 until his death, Di Segni played in numerous films in small and extra roles in the Italian film industry .
