Ed Sanders (born March 30, 1930 as Hayes Edward Sanders in Los Angeles , California , † December 14, 1954 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American boxer.

Amateur career

He won in 1952 in the final of the Olympic Games in Helsinki against Ingemar Johansson the gold medal. Johansson was disqualified from the referee for inactivity.

Professional career

1954 Sanders turned professional and quickly put against experienced opponents. However, he lost his fourth fight on points against Willie Wilson.

After winning the rematch, he faced Willie James on December 11, 1954 . He lost to a knockout in the eleventh round and was immediately rushed to hospital, unconscious, where he died 18 hours later of a subdural hematoma . He was 24 years old.
