Life

Otto von Porat was born in 1903 into an independent, wealthy family on the family estate in Älmhult, Sweden. As children, von Porat and his three brothers were tutored by an English private teacher, so that, in addition to English, he also learned to speak fluently Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, German and French. At a young age Von Porat moved with his family to Copenhagen , where his father set up a branch of the Berlitz language schools in the following years . In 1914, the Von Porats moved to Oslo , where his father made considerable maritime investments. Due to the First World War , however, the family's assets were quickly lost, so that the children were forced to look for work. Otto von Porat became interested in boxing while working as an employee of a shipping agent in Oslo.

amateur

His greatest success as an amateur boxer was winning the heavyweight gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris . He defeated the Australian Charles Jadine, the Italian Ricardo Bertazzolo, Alfredo Porzio from Argentina and in the final the Dane Søren Petersen .

professional

In 1926 Von Porat turned professional in the USA. He boxed mainly in Minneapolis and Chicago , but had only mixed success. In November 1928 and January 1930 he fought in New York's Madison Square Garden against Paolino Uzcudun and each lost over ten rounds on points. He was able to beat Battling Levinsky prematurely, he fought against Young Stribling twice: in 1927 he lost on points, in 1930 he was knocked out in the first round. He was also able to win the professional fight with his final opponent in Paris, Søren Petersen, early.
