Franco De Piccoli (born November 29, 1937 in Mestre , Venice ) is a former Italian boxer.

amateur

South African De Piccoli prevailed at the Italian heavyweight championships in 1960 and was thus able to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games in Rome that same year . There he succeeded with victories over the Belgian Willy Venneman , the three-time European champion Andrei Abramow from the Soviet Union and the Josef Němec , who started for Czechoslovakia , European champion from 1963, the entry into the finals of the Olympic boxing tournament. There he defeated the South African Daniel Bekker by knockout in the second round. De Piccoli thus became the only Italian gold medalist in the heavyweight class to date.

professional

After the Olympics, he began a five-year professional career. De Piccoli boxed exclusively in Italy and as a professional could not record any notable successes. As a result of his successful professional debut in December 1960, he won all of his fights until 1963, but then went KO twice in a row. Then he got twelve more victories in a row, which, however, were followed by two more knockout defeats, after which he ended his career.
