Josef Němec (born September 25, 1933 in České Budějovice , Czechoslovakia ; † September 10, 2013 ) was a Czechoslovak boxer . Němec was European champion in 1963 and bronze medalist at the 1957 and 1959 European Championships and the 1960 Olympic Games . He was also a participant in 1956 and 1964 .

Career

Němec was eleven times Czechoslovakian champion and contested 320 fights, of which he won 308.

One of his first international matches for the Czechoslovak selection denied Němec in 1954 against Ulli Nitzschke , GDR , which he lost to TKO in the third round. In 1956 he became Czechoslovakian champion for the first time and took part as such in the 1956 Olympic Games , in which he lost in the first fight against the later Olympic champion Pete Rademacher , USA (KO 2nd). At the two following European championships in 1957 and 1959 he won the bronze medal.

At the 1960 Olympic Games , Němec reached the semi-finals after defeating Dave Thomas, England (5: 0), and Percy Price, USA (4: 1), but lost to Franco De Piccoli , Italy (4: 1) and thus won the bronze medal.

In 1961 Němec was eliminated from the European Championships in the quarter-finals, but was able to win the European Championship in 1963 with a final victory over Andrei Abramow , Soviet Union .

In 1964 Němec took part again in the Olympic Games , but was eliminated against Giuseppe Ros , Italy (4-1), in the round of 16 and then withdrew from active sport.

After his active career, he was the trainer of the Boxing clubu táty Němce v Českých Budějovicích and Honorary President of the Budweiser Samson Boxing Club.
