Gunnar "GeeBee" Bärlund (born January 9, 1911 in Helsinki , † August 1, 1982 in the state of Florida ) was a Finnish amateur and professional boxer.

amateur

Gunnar Bärlund joined the Finnish capital club Helsingin Jyry , a club from which many Finnish top athletes came from.

At the European Boxing Championships in Budapest in 1934 , Barlund defeated the Englishman Hugh Pat Floyd in the heavyweight final . After this success, Bärlund switched to the professional boxer camp.

professional

Barlund made his debut on September 14, 1934 in Gothenburg against the Briton Jeff Wilson , whom he knocked out in the first round. A month later he was disqualified in his second fight against the German Arno Kölbin . In 1935, however, he managed to get a revenge in Helsinki by knocking out a sixth round. Barlund then boxed all over Europe and was able to win all of his fights by February 1937. Since 1936 Barlund stayed mainly in the United States , where he also fought his fights. In December 1937 Gunnar Barlund defeated Alberto Santiago Lovell from Argentina, who had only been defeated once, on points. On March 4, 1938, Barlund surprisingly beat Buddy Baer , who had been unbeaten for two years, in the seventh round by technical knockout in Madison Square Garden . Many more battles followed, the most important of which were mostly lost. On April 4, 1948, Barlund lost on points in his last fight at the age of 37 against Bill Wilson .
