Neuhauser feed channel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neuhauser Feeding Canal (NSK) is a 2.81 km long canal in Brandenburg that connects the Spree from the Neuhaus lock with the Oder-Spree Canal at km 96.21. It is a federal waterway of waterway class I and legally belongs to the Spree-Oder waterway , for which the Berlin Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible.

Construction and function

The canal is a remnant of the Kaisergraben, which began in 1558 as the first construction phase of the Friedrich Wilhelm Canal from Neuhaus on the Spree to Brieskow on the Oder, which was later completed in 1668 with the Neuhauser lock . After the opening of the Oder-Spree Canal in 1891, the Neuhaus pumping station was built in 1892 . By means of this pumping station, water is pumped from the Wergensee into the top of the Oder-Spree Canal via the Neuhauser feed canal. This enables the water level of the Oder-Spree Canal to be maintained in its highest section, despite the runoff during the locks. However, since the supply of Berlin with water from the Spree must not be jeopardized, the Fürstenberg pumping station was put into operation in 1917 in order to be able to pump water from the Oder to supply the apex in dry times.

The canal is mainly used by passenger ships and pleasure boats.
