Spree-Oder-Wasserstraße

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spree-Oder-Wasserstraße (SOW) is a collective term for several ram-regulated river sections and canal sections for the connection from the Lower Havel waterway from the Spree estuary to the Oder in Eisenhüttenstadt ( 52 ° 8 ′ 52 ″  N , 14 ° 40 ′ 52 ″  E ) in the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg . It is a federal waterway predominantly of waterway class IV with restrictions. The Berlin Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible for administration .

history

The Friedrich Wilhelm Canal , previously the Müllroser Canal , was the first artificial waterway to connect the Oder with the Spree . From Brieskow an der Oder the canal, which was completed in 1668 and has a length of approx. 27 km, led to Neuhaus an der Spree .

Course and branches

Today's waterway, called SOW for short, begins at the mouth of the Spree in Berlin-Spandau, follows the Lower Spree (6 km), the Berlin Spree (15 km) and the Treptower Spree (12 km) to the mouth of the Dahme in Berlin-Köpenick , runs through the Dahme with the Long Lake to the beginning of the western section of the Oder-Spree Canal east of Schmöckwitz (12 km); After 24 km the canal meets the Fürstenwalder Spree at Große Tränke, where the Müggelspree branches off ; The SOW then runs 19 km through the Fürstenwalder Spree to the confluence of the Drahendorfer Spree near Kersdorf (Elbe-Oder watershed), where the eastern section of the Oder-Spree Canal begins and after 41 km in Eisenhüttenstadt in the Oder at 553.40 km joins. The SOW has a total length of 129 km.

The kilometers of the waterway go uphill, against the direction of flow of the rivers Spree and Dahme, in predominantly east and south-east direction. It begins at the mouth of the Spree and ends at the Oder.

The following federal waterways are legally part of the SOW:

Locks

  • At kilometer 68.75 of the Spree-Oder waterway, there was another lock until 2005, the Große Tränke lock (no longer available, shown in italics), which has not been used for decades. The old and narrow structure was an obstacle to shipping for commercial shipping. In earlier times it was only used when the Spree was in very high water, as it was then necessary to protect the drainage system from flooding up to the Wernsdorf lock. Furthermore, the barrage reduced the flow velocity in the Spree-shaped canal section, which was advantageous for the tugboat at the time.

Planned expansion

In the course of the German Unity Transport Project No. 17 , the Spree-Oder waterway from km 0 to km 4.673 (near Rohrdamm) will be deepened from 2018 and corrected in some places. Compared to the original plan, the expansion is being carried out in a reduced form, so the navigation channel is now deepened to 3.50 meters instead of four meters. The expected construction time is given as three years.
