The Lake Rummelsburg (also Rummelsburg Bay called) is a Spree booked in Berlin with the neighboring districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg (peninsula Stralau ) and Lichtenberg ( Rummelsburg ).

The Rummelsburger See (RmS) with a length of 1.6 kilometers belongs as waterway class IV to the federal waterway Spree-Oder-Wasserstraße , for which the Berlin Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible.

At the southern connection of the bay with the Spree at kilometer 23.97, between Stralau and Rummelsburg, there are two small islands, the Kratzbruch and the Liebesinsel . Both are under nature protection .

The Rummelsburger See and its riverside regions are used by many Berliners as a recreational area , especially on the weekends .

history

In connection with the settlement of the Stralau peninsula, the northern body of water was called Lake or later Stralower See (until the 19th century). The island of love was initially called Entenwerder . On the north bank, the Kraatzgraben drained from the Friedrichsberg colony area . A section of the northeast bank served as an outdoor swimming pool .

Both north and south of the Rummelsburger See, new residential areas (water town) were built after the political turnaround on brownfield sites . From 1999 to 2001 a partial remediation was carried out because of the extensive contamination of the lake. A study carried out from May 2014 found that the sediment is still contaminated with high concentrations of pollutants.

In order to provide the residents of the neighboring Berlin districts with an improved infrastructure , the construction of a school, daycare centers and apartments is planned in the development plan (development plan Ostkreuz XVII-4) . In addition, tourism projects such as B. the Coral World , planned. Although a citizens' initiative collected 20,000 signatures against this plan, the district assembly approved the plan in a special meeting on April 29, 2019.

Incident and media presence

On January 2, 1884, the young writer Margarethe von Bülow drowned here while trying to save a child from the ice.

The island of love and the Rummelsburger See are mentioned in Fontane's novel Der Stechlin as part of an afternoon game of the protagonists on the Spree:

“Lizzi told me that here between Treptow and Stralau is also the 'Love Island'; couples in love always die, usually with a piece of paper in their hand that says everything is written on it. Is
that true ? ” “ Yes, Countess, as far as I know, it is true. There are many such love islands in our area and can be seen as proof of how widespread the condition is, which should be remedied, and if it were also by dying [...] By the way, as beautiful as 'love island' sounds, the magic goes away lost again when you picture the name of it all. The Spree area, which is widening so powerfully here, is called the 'Rummelsburger' lake. "

Scenes from the film Die Legende von Paul und Paula , premiered in 1973, were filmed at Lake Rummelsburger See . To commemorate the film, a section of the Uferweg was officially named as ' Paul-und-Paula-Ufer ' in 1998 .
