Arnold Vanderlyde (actually Arnold Petrus Maria van der Lijde ; born January 24, 1963 in Sittard ) is a former Dutch boxer . Vanderlyde won three Olympic bronze medals, twice the silver medal at the world championships and was three times European champion .

Career

Arnold Vanderlyde started boxing in 1978. In his career he played 254 fights, of which he won 233. He won the Dutch heavyweight championship eight times, in 1983 and from 1985 to 1991.

Olympic games

He took part in three Olympic Games for the Netherlands and won a bronze medal each. In 1984 he lost to the Canadian Willy DeWitt on points in the semifinals , in 1988 he won in the first round of the tournament against Henry Akinwande , but lost prematurely in the semifinals to the gold medalist Ray Mercer . In 1992 he finally failed due to a point defeat in the semifinals to Félix Savón .

World championships

Vanderlyde was also a two-time runner-up in the world championship. At the 1986 Amateur World Championships in Reno , he won the semi-finals against Michael Bentt , but lost in the final against Savón. At the 1989 World Cup in Moscow , he met the Cuban Savón again in the first fight , who again presented an insurmountable obstacle for him. He was also inferior to him on points in the 1991 final in Sydney (at that time under Fritz Sdunek ). He fought the Cuban legend five times in his career without winning.

European championships

He celebrated his greatest successes at European level and won the European title three times. At the European Championships in 1983 in Varna he failed in the quarter-finals to Alexander Jagubkin and in 1985 in Budapest he finished third, the following three title fights (1987 in Turin , 1989 in Athens with a final victory over Axel Schulz and 1991 in Gothenburg ) he was able to then decide for yourself.

In 1992 he ended his career. He never became a professional boxer and is now a sports and business businessman.
