Career

Amateur career

Olle Tandberg started boxing as a teenager at Djurgårdens IF Stockholm . He developed very quickly and became the Swedish heavyweight champion in 1936 at the age of 18. He was then sent to the Olympic Games in Berlin that same year . He met the American Artur Oliver in the preliminary round, whom he beat on points. In the quarterfinals he was defeated by Ferenc Nagy from Hungary and had to retire without a medal.

Olle Tandberg celebrated his first major international success at the 1937 European Championships in Milan . There he defeated Schlunegger from Switzerland and Erling Nilsen from Norway on points and also beat the German Olympic champion of 1936 Herbert Runge on points in the final battle . He was thus European heavyweight champion.

On January 16, 1938, Olle Tandberg defeated Herbert Runge again on points in Stockholm on the occasion of an international match between Sweden and Germany . At an international meeting on April 29, 1938 in Berlin , he lost to Herbert Runge on points.

On January 29, 1939, Tandberg and Runge met again in Hamburg as part of an international match between Germany and Sweden . This time Olle Tandberg won again on points. At the European Championships in 1939 in Dublin from April 18 to April 22, 1939, Tandberg defeated John McMullan from Ireland on points in the preliminary round and then celebrated his third victory over Herbert Runge in the semifinals. In the final, he finally defeated the Italian Nemesio Lazzari safely on points and thus became European amateurs champion for the second time.

Profile career

At the end of 1940, Olle Tandberg joined the professional boxer. He fought his first fight on January 31, 1941 in Gothenburg and won over the German Jakob Schönrath by technical knockout in the sixth round. Against the same boxer, he played his next fight on March 23, 1941 in Berlin and won this time on points.

In 1942, Olle Tandberg fought four heavy fights. First he defeated the Italian champion Luigi Musina in Gothenburg over ten rounds on points, then he fought in Stuttgart against the top German boxer Arno Kölblin in a draw. On May 3, 1942, he suffered his first defeat as a professional boxer against Walter Neusel in Berlin when he lost on points after ten rounds. Finally, on July 26, 1942, in Rome, he also lost his revenge against Luigi Musina on points.

Despite the defeats against Neusel and Musina, Olle Tandberg got the chance to fight for the vacant European heavyweight championship on May 30, 1943 in the Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm against the Belgian Karel Sys . In front of 40,000 enthusiastic spectators, Olle Tandberg won this fight after 15 rounds on points and was thus also European champion among professional boxers. However, he could not enjoy this title for too long, because already during his first title defense on November 14, 1943 in Brussels , he lost this title by losing points in the revenge to Karel Sys.

This fight was Olle Tandberg's last fight until the end of the war. In 1945 Olle Tandberg was back in the ring and fought some very interesting fights until the end of his career.

On June 2, 1946, he defeated the English heavyweight hope Jack London safely on points. On September 11, 1946, he won the Swedish heavyweight championship with a knockout victory in the ninth round over John Nilsson . On February 21, 1947 he fought in Gothenburg for the third time against Luigi Musina and won by technical knockout in the eighth round. On April 25, 1947, Olle Tandberg celebrated a lightning victory in Stockholm when he knocked out the former European champion Heinz Lazek from Vienna in the first round.

On July 8, 1947 and October 12, 1947, Olle Tandberg celebrated two notable victories in Stockholm over the Americans Joe Baksi and Aaron Wilson , who were ranked high in the world heavyweight division. On January 9, 1948, he fought for the first time in the United States. He met here in Madison Square Garden to New York to Joey Maxim , a later world champion at light heavyweight. The lighter and more agile Maxim turned out to be too fast for Olle Tandberg and won this fight after ten rounds on points.

After this fight, Olle Tandberg won the next five games against slightly easier opponents. On August 14, 1949, he played a fight against world number one Jersey Joe Walcott in the fully occupied Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm . With a win he hoped to be able to challenge world champion Joe Louis . It didn't happen, because Walcott won the fight by technical knockout in the fifth round.

After this defeat, Olle Tandberg ended his career as a professional boxer.
