Joey Maxim (* 28. March 1922 in Cleveland , † 2. June 2001 in West Palm Beach , Florida ; actually Giuseppi Antonio Berardinelli ) was an American boxer in the light heavyweight division , but also frequently against heavyweights took.

career

Maxim won the US Middleweight Championships in 1940 (-73 kg). In 1941 he began his professional career, but lost his third fight on points. In June 1942 he was defeated by Jimmy Bivins . A few months later he fought twice against the later heavyweight world champion Ezzard Charles , both fights he lost on points.

Between 1946 and 1947 he boxed three times against Jersey Joe Walcott , winning the first fight after ten rounds, but losing the next two.

On January 24, 1950 he was after a fight in London against Freddie Mills by knockout in the tenth round world light heavyweight champion.

In 1951 he boxed two more times against Ezzard Charles, who successfully defended his heavyweight title.

On December 17, 1952, he lost his title in a fight against Archie Moore in St. Louis over fifteen rounds on points. He could not beat Moore in the following two back fights.

Among other things, he boxed in the course of his career in 1952 against the coming from the middleweight superstar Sugar Ray Robinson , against whom he defended his world title, since Robinson gave up while in the lead before the final round exhausted. In 1954 he boxed against the unbeaten but also at the beginning of his career Floyd Patterson , whom he defeated on points after eight rounds. However, he did not succeed in 1957 when another aspiring heavyweight boxer named Eddie Make defeated him in two consecutive fights, each over ten rounds on points. Against Willie Pastrano he lost in 1959 over ten laps on points.

He played his last fight in Mannheim on May 17, 1958 against Ulli Ritter and also lost the point decision.

In 1994 Maxim was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
