Archie Moore (born December 13, 1916 in Benoit , Mississippi as Archibald Lee Wright , † December 9, 1998 in San Diego ) was an American professional boxer.
career
His first fight as a professional boxer played Moore on January 31, 1936. In 1944 he was defeated by Charley Burley , against Ezzard Charles he lost three times between 1946 and 1948. In 1945 he lost by knockout in the sixth round against Jimmy Bivins , but he then defeated in four more encounters. In 1949 he had the first of four victories against Harold Johnson .
On 17 December 1952, at the age of 36, he fought Joey Maxim in St. Louis for the first time to the world title in the light heavyweight and won over 15 rounds on points. "Ageless" Archie remained world champion until May 12, 1962. At that time he was already 45 years old.
In the heavyweight division Moore also tried at times, but was not successful against Rocky Marciano , who knocked him out in the ninth round, or against Floyd Patterson , with whom he boxed for the vacant world title after Marciano's resignation. He lost to Patterson on November 30, 1956 in Chicago by knockout in the fifth round.
He lost his penultimate fight in 1962 by technical knockout in round four against upcoming star Muhammad Ali . His last fight on March 15, 1963 against Mike DiBiase in Phoenix , he won by knockout in round three.
Moore is considered the boxer with the most official knockout wins (unofficially Jimmy Wilde ) in boxing history. In 1990 he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
In the independent, eternal computer world rankings BoxRec , he is regarded as the most successful boxer of all time, regardless of weight class.

1960 played Archie Moore in the Huckleberry Finn film " Adventure on the Mississippi " the role of the slave Jim; until 1982 he took over roles in films and television episodes again and again. His films included The Lucky Boy and The Insatiable .
Four days before his 82nd birthday, Moore, who had undergone bypass surgery in 1994 , died of heart failure in a nursing home in San Diego.
