Gene Fullmer (born July 21, 1931 in West Jordan , Utah , † April 27, 2015 in Taylorsville , Utah) was an American boxer.

Professional career

The Mormon from the boxing province of Utah became a professional middleweight in 1951 and beat Paul Pender , Rocky Castellani , Gil Turner and Ralph “Tiger” Jones in the early stages of his career , which established him as a world class man despite three point defeats in the meantime. Fullmer had a solid punch and above-average taker skills; he boxed aggressively, but without great subtleties.

On January 2, 1957, he won the world title by winning points over fifteen rounds against the gradually aging Sugar Ray Robinson . In the rematch - four months later - he lost the belt again. Robinson knocked him out through one of the most famous left hooks in boxing history with a single direct hit in the fifth round.

In 1959 he defeated Carmen Basilio for the NBA version title by technical knockout in the fourteenth round. He defended him seven times, including against Spider Webb , Basilio, Robinson in a third fight (points win), Florentino Fernández and Benny Paret . In a fourth fight against Robinson he boxed, as well as against Joey Giardello , a draw.

In 1962 he met the Nigerian Dick Tiger on an opponent whom he simply could not defeat; Tiger took the title from him over fifteen rounds on points. A second fight ended in a draw, he lost a third prematurely. Then he ended his career.

In 1968 he was seen in a small role in the war film The Devil's Brigade .

Gene Fullmer's brother Don was also a successful world number boxer.

In 1991, Fullmer was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame . He died on April 27, 2015 at the age of 83 in Taylorsville, Utah, of complications from dementia accompanied by a bacterial infection .
