history

Beginnings as a bakery and inn (1853 to 1903)

On April 12th, 1853, the master baker Max Lüning laid the foundation stone for today's company at the age of 25. In addition to the groceries and mail order business, the bakery and the restaurant business of the entrepreneurs in the early years also transport services. On July 19, 1881 Heinrich Rieländer married Katharina, the daughter of Max Lünings, and from that year headed the company.

Development of the wholesale business (1903 to 1945)

In 1903 Max Rieländer, the son of Heinrich Rieländer and Katharina Lüning, took over the management of the company. He ran the business together with his father: the father took care of the inn and the bakery, the son devoted himself to the development and expansion of the wholesale business. Max Rieländer created a steadily growing customer base, initially primarily in the area of the old county of Rietberg. Max Rieländer died in 1936 at the age of only 54. After his death, his son Heinz Rieländer continued the business together with his mother. At that time, 26 people were working for the company.

Further development through shopfitting and retail (1945 to 1989)

The family managed to keep the business going through the war years. After the end of the war, the development of the wholesale business continued and was supplemented in 1951 with the founding of Lüning Ladenbau Rietberg and in the 1960s with its own retail business. In 1967, Heinz Rieländer opened the first self-service halls with non-food assortments, and in 1968 six Elli retail stores with food assortments. In addition to a shop in Rietberg, this year others opened in Rhoden, Steinhagen, Lippstadt, Korbach and Lütgendortmund as well as an A&O market in the east of Neuhaus Castle. In 1975 the fifth generation change took place at the top of the Lüning Group and Wolfgang Rieländer moved into the management.

Reunification and cooperation with Edeka (from 1989)

With the fall of the Berlin Wall , Lüning opened for the first time to retail outside of North Rhine-Westphalia and opened several non-food markets, shopfitting branches and a non-food warehouse in the new federal states in quick succession . The cooperation with the Edeka regional company Edeka Minden-Hanover opened up new purchasing opportunities and conditions that make the competitiveness of Lüning's own markets and Lüning wholesalers a strong regional trading partner to this day. In 2001 the wholesale warehouse moved from Rietberg to the new Lüning logistics center in Langenberg-Benteler. In 2009, Philipp Rieländer, the sixth generation of the family, joined the management of the Lüning Group and in 2013 he became managing director. He took over a trading company with over 1,600 employees, two logistics centers, 30 own stores, two shop fitting companies and an in-house advertising agency and printing company from his father Wolfgang Rieländer.

Further development of the Lüning Group (from 2014)

In 2014 the Lüning logistics center was expanded to include a high-bay warehouse. In 2015 the Lüning shopfitting moved from Rietberg to Langenberg-Benteler and has since been located opposite the Lüning logistics center on the B55 . At the same time, the logistics center was enlarged with the new “Benteler Ost” external warehouse, which also moved into the new halls.
