The Salt Lake Tribune is a daily newspaper in the US state of Utah , which has the largest readership in Salt Lake City . The Salt Lake Tribune is distributed by Newspaper Agency Corporation , which also distributes Deseret Morning News . The Tribune - or "Trib" as it is locally known - is currently owned by the Denver- based MediaNews Group . For up to 100 years the newspaper was privately owned by the heirs of US Senator Thomas Kearns . After Thomas Kearns' death in 1918, the company was run by his widow Jennie Judge Kearns and son Thomas F. Kearns. For a long time the editor of the newspaper was John F. Fitzpatrick, who began his career as secretary to Senator Kearns.
history
Successor to Utah Magazine , the paper was founded in 1871 as the Mormon Tribune by a group of businessmen led by former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , Amasa Lyam and William Godbe. They disagreed with the economic and political positions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After a year, the title was replaced by the Salt Lake Daily Tribune and Utah Mining Gazette . Not long after, the name was simply shortened to The Salt Lake Tribune . For some time the publisher also released an evening edition known as The Salt Lake Telegram .
After the newspaper was bought by three Kansas men in 1873, it became known as the anti-Mormon mouthpiece, which consistently supported the Utah Liberal Party .
In 1901, newly elected Roman Catholic Senator Thomas Kearns and his business partner David Keith bought the Tribune . Kearns took steps to cut the anti-Mormon overtones of the newspaper. He was elected senator because he had good relations with parliamentarians, mostly members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and because he suppressed the anti-Mormon overtones of his newspaper. After Kearn's death in 1918, Keith's family took over part of the paper.
Kearns Secretary John F. Fitzpatrick became editor in 1924. In 1952, the Tribune entered into a joint operating agreement with Deseret News to create the Newspaper Agency Corporation . In 1960 Fitzpatrick passed the reins to John W. Gallivan, who was publisher until 1984 and chairman of the board until 1997.
The Kearns family owned a majority stake in the newspaper until 1997, when they sold that year to Tele-Communications Inc , a multimedia company that was later acquired by AT&T . The Tribune was then sold to the Denver , Colorado- based MediaNews Group , which is partially owned by publisher William Dean Singleton .
In 2002, the Tribune got caught up in a discussion after employees sold leaked inside information - similar to the Elizabeth Smart case at The National Enquirer . Tribune editor James "Jay" Shelledy resigned from his job at the newspaper when he realized the aftermath of the scandal. Two employees have also been removed from their positions as Tribune reporters.
In 2004 the newspaper decided to move out of its historic downtown Salt Lake City location , the Tribune Building, and move to the Gateway Mall. Many people, including individual Tribune employees, spoke out against the move because they believed it would damage the economy of downtown Salt Lake City. The move was completed in May 2005, and editor Nancy Conway told Tribune staff, "It's only a building."
