Nonito Donaire (* 16th November 1982 in Talibon , Bohol ) is a Filipino professional boxer, former IBF world champion flyweight, former WBC - and WBO world champion bantamweight, former WBO and IBF world champion in the super bantamweight and former WBA -Superweltmeister in featherweight. Since November 3, 2018 he has been WBA bantamweight world champion.

Personal

Nonito Donaire was born in the Philippines and came to the United States with his family when he was ten. He has two brothers and a sister; his older brother Glenn Donaire (* 1979) was also a boxer and two-time world championship challenger for the IBF. His cousin Arvin Jugarap is a cutmen in his corner of the ring. He was trained by his father Nonito Donaire senior and later by the American boxing trainer Robert Garcia . The former professional boxer Richard Donaire is his cousin.

On August 8th, 2008 he married Rachel Marcial, a former martial artist ( Taekwondo ).

Amateur career

He began amateur boxing at the age of eleven and competed in 76 light flyweight fights, of which he won 68. His greatest successes;

  • 1998: 1st place at the National Silver Gloves in the USA
  • 1999: 1st place at the International Junior Olympics in Mexico
  • 2000: 1st place at the US Championships in Colorado Springs
  • 2000: 1st place at the National Junior Olympics in Michigan, final victory against James Kirkland
  • 2000: 2nd place in the US Olympic qualification in Florida, controversial final defeat against Brian Viloria ( 6-8 )

Professional career

Donaire played his first professional fight on February 22, 2001 in California, in which he was able to defeat the Mexican José Lázaro by knockout in the first round. In his second professional fight, however, he suffered his first defeat when he lost on points to the American Rosendo Sanchez. Until his first chance at the World Cup, he played 16 more fights, all of which he was able to win. He was in flyweight champion of the Asia-Pacific region of the WBO and in super flyweight, North American champion of the NABF .

On July 7, 2007 he boxed as an outsider for the IBF World Flyweight Championship against the Armenian title holder Vic Darchinyan (match record: 28-0, 24 prematurely). Donaire surprisingly won by tKo in the fifth round after he hit Darchinyan with a left hook on the chin. The precipitate was from The Ring , even elected knockout of the year, the battle to the surprise of the year.

Donaire made his first title defense on December 1, 2007 against Luis Maldonado (35-2) and won by tKo in the eighth round. He then defended the title on November 1, 2008 by tKo in the sixth round against the South African Moruti Mthalane (23-1) and on April 19, 2009 by tKo in the fourth round against the American Raúl Martínez (24-0 ). Then he put down the title to box in the super flyweight again.

On August 15, 2009 he fought for the interim WBA world title against Rafael Concepcion (13-3) from Panama. Donaire won this fight by a unanimous point decision. After further victories against Manuel Vargas (27-4), Hernán Márquez (27-1) and Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2), he received a fight for the WBC and WBO world titles on February 19, 2011 in Las Vegas Bantamweight. Donaire won again surprisingly through tKo in the second round against the Mexican title holder Fernando Montiel (44-2). In the second lap, Donaire deliberately took a straight from Montiel to counter with a cracking left swing himself. It did not fail to have its effect, Montiel had to hit the ground heavily and could only get up with the utmost effort. The fight was released once more, but Montiel was so beaten that he was taken out of the fight at the first blow Donaire's. Precipitation was again voted knockout of the year by The Ring.

He defended both titles on October 22, 2011 unanimously on points against Omar Andrés Narváez (35-0). After this fight he rose to super bantamweight and defeated Wilfredo Vázquez junior (21-1) on points on February 4, 2012, which earned him the vacant WBO world championship belt. On July 7, 2012, he also won the IBF World Championships after defeating Jeffrey Mathebula (26-3). He then won ahead of schedule against Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4) and Jorge Arce (61-6).

On April 13, 2013, he boxed in New York against the Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0), who had become twice Olympic champion and twice world champion among the amateurs. Donaire lost unanimously on points. In November 2013 he won the rematch against Vic Darchinyan by tKo in the ninth round. At the end of May 2014 he won the WBA Super Featherweight Championship title through a technical decision in Round 4 against Simpiwe Vetyeka (26-2). Due to an unintentional headbutt, Donaire suffered a cut injury, which resulted in the fight being broken off and the score sheet being evaluated, on which Donaire was in the lead.

He eventually lost the WBA title on Oct. 18, 2014 by a TKO defeat in the sixth round to Nicholas Walters (24-0). After early wins against William Prado (22-4) and Anthony Settoul (20-3), he received a WBO title chance in super bantamweight. He won against Cesar Juarez (17-3) unanimously on points in December 2015.

He won his first title defense early in April 2016 against Zsolt Bedák (25-1), before losing the world title in November 2016 by losing points to Jessie Magdaleno (23-0).

In April 2018 he lost to Carl Frampton (24-1) in the fight for the WBO interim World Cup. For this he won the WBA world bantamweight title on November 3, 2018 by an early win against Ryan Burnett (19-0).

Honors

  • 2007: Voted the most outstanding boxer of the year by the World Boxing Hall of Fame (WBHF).
  • In 2008, the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) named Donaire, together with swimmer Miguel Molina, athlete of the year.
  • 2012: Voted Boxer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), ESPN.com and the World Boxing Organization (WBO).
