Vakhtang Dartschinjan , known as Vic Darchinyan ( Armenian Վախթանգ Դարչինյան ; born January 7, 1976 in Vanadzor , Armenian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Armenian professional boxer.

amateur

His greatest amateur successes were each a bronze flyweight medal at the 1998 World Cup in Beijing , the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York City and the 1998 European Championships in Minsk .

In 1997 he took part in the World Championships in Budapest , but failed in the third round of the eventual winner, the Cuban Manuel Mantilla . At the 1999 World Championships in Houston he met Mantilla again in the first round and was able to defeat him this time, but lost to the Kazakhs Bolat Shumadilov in the next round .

In 2000 he took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney for Armenia , but lost again in the quarterfinals to the Kazakhs Shumadilov. In total, he played 176 amateur fights of which he won 158.

Professional career

After the Olympic Games, Dartschinjan moved to Australia, where he became a professional and initially boxed in the flyweight division. His trainer is Jeff Fenech . On December 16, 2004, he defeated the IBF title holder Irene Pacheco by technical knockout in the eleventh round and thus became the first Armenian boxer to win a professional world title. His first title defense he completed against the South African Mzukisi Sikali . He was then able to defend his title five times, including against Glenn Donaire from the Philippines , before losing the title on July 7, 2007 to his younger brother Nonito Donaire . Even before the fight, Dartschinjan had announced that he would want to change the weight class after this fight, as the title unification fights against other world flyweight champions could not be realized. The Armenian was defeated by a technical knockout in the fifth round against Donaire. The result was voted “Ko of the Year 2007” and the “Surprise of the Year 2007” by the renowned Ring Magazine .

After the defeat, Dartschinjan rose to the super flyweight division. After he was able to win his next fight against a build-up opponent, only a disappointing draw followed in an IBF elimination match against the Filipino Z Gorres. Nevertheless, Dartschinjan then got his chance for the IBF title. With a dominant performance he defeated the Russian Dmitri Kirilow on August 2, 2008 by knockout in the fifth round and thus took the IBF super flyweight title from him. Then a union fight with WBA and WBC world champion Cristian Mijares was agreed for November 1, 2008. Dartschinjan defeated the favored Mexican by knockout in the ninth round. In February 2009 he successfully defended his title against the Mexican Jorge Arce . The fight had to be stopped in the eleventh round by the referee due to numerous lacerations over Arce's eyes.

On July 11th, 2009 Dartschinjan went to Sunrise (Florida) against the reigning IBF world champion in bantamweight Joseph Agbeko . Darchinyan lost this fight unanimously on points. Then he defended the WBA and WBC titles in super flyweight, the IBF title he had in the meantime for his excursion into the bantamweight, against the Mexican Tomás Rojas . He won this fight by a knockout in the second round. After a last defense of the title in March 2010, Dartschinjan finally moved to the bantamweight division. On December 11, 2010 he lost to the undefeated Mexican Abner Mares on points.

On April 23, 2011 he won the IBO world championship by dropping out in the 5th round after the title holder Yonnhy Pérez was injured after an accidental headbutt.
