Jorge Arce (* 27 July 1979 in Los Mochis , Sinaloa , Mexico as Jorge Armando Arce Armenta ) is a Mexican professional boxer, former WBO - and WBC world champion in the light flyweight, former WBO world champion in the super flyweight, former WBO world champion in the super bantamweight and former WBO bantamweight champion.
Private
Jorge Arce is the son of a farm worker and has two older and one younger brother. His younger brother Francisco Arce (* 1981) was also a professional boxer and North American champion ( NABF ) in super bantamweight between 2000 and 2011 . As a child, Jorge Arce was hyperactive and difficult with other children, so his mother saw a doctor who advised her to let her son participate in competitive sports. That's how Jorge got into boxing at the age of ten. His later battle name "Travieso", Spanish for cocky or naughty, is chosen based on his childhood.
Outside the ring, he became known as a participant in reality TV series such as "Big Brother VIP", "Dancing for a Dream" and "El Desafio". He has been married to Karime Gutiérrez since 2007 and has four children.
Boxing career
He played around 45 amateur fights, of which he said he lost only two, one of them by disqualification. In the national elimination for a participation in the 1996 Summer Olympics, he lost to Martín Castillo , later WBA world champion in super flyweight.
He turned pro at the age of 16 and won his debut on January 19, 1996 in Tijuana by knocking out in the first round. In his first 16 fights, he emerged as the winner 14 times, 11 of them prematurely. In addition to a draw with Gabriel Muñoz, he also suffered a knockout loss against the eventual WBC world champion Omar Romero . In December 1997 he was also defeated on points against the later IBF world champion Víctor Burgos . His next four fights he won again, including two wins against three-time World Cup challenger Miguel Martinez.
On December 5, 1998 he won his first light flyweight world title when he unanimously defeated Juan Domingo Cordoba (balance: 32-4) over twelve rounds in Mexico on points and thus received his WBO belt. He also had Cordoba on the ground in the fourth round. In April 1999 he defended the title in Italy early against Salvatore Fanni (32-7). The Italian was taken out of the fight due to several cut injuries. In July 1999 he finally lost in his second title defense by technical knockout in the eleventh round against Michael Carbajal (48-4). Then he won again nine fights in a row, six of them prematurely. Among the defeated opponents were Ladislao Vazquez and Juanito Rubillar.
On July 6, 2002, he boxed in South Korea against Choi Yo-sam (24-1) for the WBC world championship in light flyweight and won it by technical knockout in the sixth round. He then defended the title until the end of 2004 against Agustin Luna, Ernesto Castro, twice against Melchor Cob Castro and against Joma Gamboa , Juanito Rubillar and Juan Francisco Centeno. Only with Rubillar did he have to complete the full number of laps. Then he rose to flyweight.
In 2005 and 2006 he was able to win each of his seven fights early. He beat Hussein Hussein (27-1) twice, as well as Angel Antonio Priolo (30-2), twice Adonis Rivas , Rosendo Álvarez (37-2) and Masibulele Makepula (28-3). In January 2007 he prevailed unanimously on points against the Argentine Julio David Roque Ler (23-1) in a title eliminator in the super flyweight division and on April 14, 2007 he boxed for the WBC World Championship in this weight class against Cristian Mijares (30-3), but was subject to this in Texas on points.
He then defeated Tomás Rojas (25-10) and Medgoen Singsurat (53-4) each by knockout, as well as Devid Lookmahanak (18-1) on points. Against Rafael Concepción (11-2) and Isidro García (25-5), he prevailed prematurely. Because of these successes, he was determined to challenge the reigning WBA, WBC and IBF world champion in super flyweight, Wachtang Dartschinjan (31-1). Against the Armenians, however, Arce had no chance on February 7, 2009 and was drawn out of the fight by the referee after the eleventh round. Until then, all three judges saw Dartschinjan clearly ahead with 109: 100. A knockout win against Fernando Lumacad (19-1) in June 2009 was followed by a point defeat in September against Simphiwe Nongqayi (16-0).
On January 30, 2010, he finally won the WBO world title in super flyweight by an early decision in round seven against Angky Angkota (25-4). Instead of defending the title, he then rose to super bantamweight and defeated Cecilio Santos (24-13), Martín Castillo (35-3) and Adolfo Ramos (18-10). Against ex-WBA world champion Lorenzo Parra (31-2) he reached a draw in September 2010.
On May 7, 2011, he boxed in Las Vegas against Wilfredo Vázquez (20-0) for the WBO World Superbantamweight Championship. After an even fight over eleven rounds, Arce was finally able to prevail in the twelfth round and give Vázquez hanging on the ropes with series of blows, whereupon the corner of the ring of the Puerto Rican threw in the towel. Until the fight was stopped, two of the three judges saw the fight as a draw. In September of the same year he defended the title by technical knockout in the fourth round against the South African Simphiwe Nongqayi (17-1), against whom he had lost on points two years earlier.
He then boxed bantamweight and also won the WBO world title here when he again defeated Angky Angkotta (26-5) on November 26, 2011. In February 2012, he also managed a knockout victory in the fifth round against Lorenzo Parra (31-3). His fight against Jesus Manuel Rojas (18-1) ended valueless in June 2012 after Rojas knocked the Mexican down with two illegal blows to the back and the back of the head. At this point the referee had already interrupted the fight to give Arce a rest after he had been hit by a low blow from the Puerto Rican. In September 2012 he won unanimously against ex-WBO world champion Mauricio Martínez .
On December 15, 2012, Arce tried again in Texas to win the WBO world championship in super bantamweight, but had no chance against the Filipino title holder Nonito Donaire (30-1) and lost after three knockouts in the third round. He only returned to the ring in November 2013 and defeated the Colombian José Carmona (22-3) by knockout in the eighth round. In June 2014, an early win against Jorge Lacierva (41-9) followed.
On October 4, 2014 he lost by technical knockout in the eleventh round against Jhonny González (56-8).
