Jhonny González Vera (born September 15, 1981 in Pachuca de Soto ) is a Mexican professional boxer, former WBO world champion in bantamweight and two-time WBC world champion in featherweight.

Boxing career

Jhonny González is the son of a former professional boxer, started boxing himself at the age of twelve, won 164 of 178 amateur fights and won the Mexican championships three times. He has been boxing as a professional since 1999.

He lost his first two professional fights on points, but then won 13 fights in a row and also defeated the two-time World Cup challenger Julio César Ávila by knockout in the first round. On October 26, 2001, he won the NABF's North American bantamweight championship title in Temecula, California, by knocking out Ablorh Sowah.

In February 2002 he lost on points to his compatriot Ricardo Vargas, to whom he also lost in the rematch two months later. For this he won his next 19 duels, 16 of them prematurely. He also defeated the undefeated Roger González (23-0), Alejandro Montiel (49-5), ex- IBF world champion Francisco Tejedor, Gabriel Elizondo (17-0) and ex- WBO world champion Adonis Rivas.

These numerous successes brought him on October 29, 2005 in Tucson , Arizona, a world championship chance in bantamweight against WBO world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin (65-8) from Thailand (However, the WBO was not one of the major associations at that time.). González had his opponent down three times and won by knockout in the seventh round. On February 25, 2006 he defeated the former IBF and WBO world champion Marc Johnson (44-4) by knockout in the eighth round and defended his title on May 27, 2006 by winning points against the multiple WBO and WBC World champion Fernando Montiel (33-1).

After his subsequent move to super bantamweight, he boxed on September 16, 2006 in Las Vegas for the WBC World Championship against Israel Vázquez (40-3). González had his opponent down in Rounds 4 and 6, but suffered knockdowns even in Rounds 7 and 10. Finally, the corner of his ring threw in the towel and Vázquez was declared the winner by tKo.

He then switched back to bantamweight and won the WBO title back in his next fight on March 30, 2007 in Tucson. He had prevailed by knocking out the Colombian Irene Pacheco (33-1). But in his first title defense on August 11, 2007 in Sacramento , he lost leading on points, by knockout in the seventh round against Gerry Peñalosa (51-6).

He then won again six fights in a row, including against ex-IBF world champion Mauricio Pastrana (34-8). On May 23, 2009 he tried again in Mexico to secure the WBC world championship belt in super bantamweight, but lost to the Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka (33-4) by tKo in the third round. After this fight he rose to featherweight.

His first opponent in this weight class was the Colombian José Francisco Mendoza (21-3), whom he defeated by knockout in the first round. With further victories, including against Antonio Larell Davis (26-5) and Jackson Asiku (26-3), he got a WBC World Cup chance against Hozumi Hasegawa (29-3). This fight, which took place on April 8, 2011 in Kobe , won González by knockout in the fourth round. Until April 2012 he defended his world title against Tomas Villa, Rogers Mtagwa, Roinet Caballero and Elio Rojas.

On September 15, 2012, he boxed in his fifth title defense in Las Vegas against Daniel Ponce de León (43-4). The fight was stopped in the eighth round after González sustained a cut injury from an accidental headbutt by Ponce de León. Then it came to the evaluation of the points sheet, on which Daniel Ponce de León was in the lead at the time and was declared the new world champion. The decisive factor for this was, not least, a knockdown by González in the sixth round.

After two consecutive build-up wins, he fought again for the WBC title on August 24, 2013 in California. He defeated the current title holder Abner Mares (26-0) by knockout in the first round. In May 2014 he defeated the undefeated Clive Atwell (12-0). In October 2014, a tKo victory followed in the eleventh round against Jorge Arce (64-7).

On March 28, 2015 he lost to Gary Russell junior (25-1) by tKo in the fourth round .

  1. Joshua's compatriot owned the belts of WBA, IBF and WBC, at that time the WBO was not yet part of the illustrious circle. She has only been there since 2007. Since then, the undisputed champion has had four titles.
