Gary Russell Jr., the oldest of four boxing brothers, started boxing at Enigma Boxing Capital Heights , Maryland , sports club in 1995 . From the start of his career, he has been looked after by his father, Gary Russell Sr., who is supported by coaches Robert Martin and Floyd Seymour. As an alternative to boxing, Russell likes to play football.

He achieved his first major success in 2004 when he became US Junior Olympic Champion, comparable to the US Junior Champion. At the age of just 17 he won the National Golden Gloves in Little Rock in 2005 with a victory over Sergio Perales and in the same year he also won the US Seniors Championship in Colorado Springs with a victory over Sytel Wilborn Bantamweight. He was the youngest American boxer to have achieved this "double" by then.

At the 2005 World Championships in Mianyang / China , Gary Russell junior started in the bantamweight division and won over Detelin Dalaklijew , Bulgaria (25:21), Tyson Cave, Canada (22: 9) and Al Gharaghir Ibrahim from Iran (34:13) Points before he lost in the semifinals against Rustam Rachimow from Germany on points (17:28). By reaching the semi-finals, however, he had already won a bronze medal at the World Championships.

In 2006, Gary Russell junior was again USA bantamweight champion. He defeated Leodegario Santa Cruz in the final with 13: 6 points. He also won the so-called National PAL Championships that year with a victory over Roberto Marroquin (16: 7).

In 2007 Russell had to give up injured at the USA bantamweight championship after a victorious fight against Jessy Cruz. But he was able to start again at the World Championships in Chicago . He won in Chicago over Rudolf Dydi from Slovakia on points (13: 6), then defeated Peter Moyshenson from Israel by breaking off in the third round and also beat Ali Hallab from France on points (22:14). In the quarter-finals, however, he had to admit defeat to Sergei Wodopjanow from Russia , the eventual world champion , on points (6:16) and came in fifth at this World Cup with three other boxers.

In the US Olympic elimination, which took place after these World Championships, Gary Russell Jr. lost his first fight against Roberto Marroquin on points (16:17). That was his first loss to an American boxer in eight years. Due to the special mode of the event, he was able to continue boxing and made it to the final with four wins over David Clar, Sammy Dipace, Sergio Perales and Ronny Rios, in which he faced Robert Marroquin again. In this fight he was no longer surprised and won clearly on points (25:13), which he secured participation in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .

However, he suffered a circulatory collapse during training in Beijing on August 8, 2008 due to dehydration in order to maintain the weight limit and was therefore unable to compete in the Olympic boxing tournament.
