Career
Joseph Diaz was born in 1992 in South El Monte, just a few miles east of metropolis Los Angeles , and has been an avid baseball player since childhood . At the age of ten, however, Diaz decided to devote more time to boxing, mainly because he should learn to defend himself. He was trained from this time by his father, who accompanied him as a trainer or assistant coach until his first professional fights. Through his father, Joseph Diaz Sr., a member of Teamsters "Local 986" (Eng. "Niederlassung 986") in South El Monte, who works for the transport company Mayflower in Whittier a few kilometers south, he was at a young age in Housed the union boxing club. In the “Teamster's Youth Boxing Club” the future student of the South El Monte High School was able to celebrate successes, including winning two national championships at an advanced age.
After more than 100 victories in amateur fights and winning the USA Boxing National Championships in 2010 and 2011, the young boxer achieved a remarkable success with four consecutive victories at the United States Olympic Games for the 2012 Summer Olympics . Since the rules for participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games had changed, the gold medal that Diaz achieved in the trials was not enough for a fixed place in London. After his success at the Olympic Games in Mobile , Alabama , he had to face boxers from all over the world at the actual qualifying tournament, the 2011 World Boxing Championships in Azerbaijan , at the end of September 2011 . The goal was to get into the top 10 in his weight class, which he achieved with three wins from four fights in fifth place; A total of 57 different athletes competed in its weight class. At just 18 years of age, he was also the youngest athlete in the entire tournament.
Although he had never competed in a professional fight, Diaz took part in the men's bantamweight boxing competition at the 2012 Olympics and won the first round. He won with 19 to 9 points against the Ukrainian boxer Pavlo Ishchenko and in the subsequent round of 16 against the 2011 world champion, the Cuban Lázaro Álvarez , against whom Joseph Diaz had lost his only fight at the World Cup in Azerbaijan. As in Baku , Diaz could not prevail against the strong southpaw in London and lost with 15:21 on points. While Álvarez was able to advance to the semifinals and thus received the bronze medal, Diaz was eliminated from the current competition.
After the Olympics, Diaz was able to prove his experience gained in amateur fights for the first time in a professional fight. On his debut on December 15, 2012 at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, he celebrated his first win as a professional boxer against Vicente Alfaro, who was over ten years his senior. Just a few days later, he was signed to Golden Boy Promotions , the successful US boxing stable that constantly has new champions in its ranks. In the following year, 2013, the young southern Californian had another seven professional fights, six of which he won by knockout. So far undefeated, he completed his last official professional match on December 13, 2013 against the Mexican Carlos Rodriguez.
