Lázaro Álvarez (born January 28, 1991 ) is a Cuban boxer.

Career

For the first time on the international stage Álvarez showed himself at the Cadet World Championships (U17) 2007 in Baku , where he won the silver medal in the bantamweight division. In the spring of the following year, at the age of 16, he took part in the men's national championships for the first time, but retired from the flyweight division in the first fight. In 2008 he also took part in the Junior World Championships (U19), but was eliminated in the first fight.

At the Cuban Championships in 2009 Álvarez was eliminated in the round of 16, but was then allowed to participate in international tournaments for the first time. He won a tournament in Santiago de Cuba in the lightweight (-60 kg).

Álvarez celebrated his first success at national level in the men's field in 2010 at the championships in Havana , where he won the silver medal. In the same year he also won an international tournament in Venezuela .

In 2011 Álvarez won the qualification for the Pan American Games in Cumaná and tournaments in Havana and Venezuela as well as the silver medal in Barquisimeto . With these successes in his back, he took part in world championships for the first time and won after victories against Robenilson de Jesus, Brazil (18:13), Denis Makarov , Germany (13: 8), Vittorio Parrinello , Italy (13:11), Joseph Diaz , USA (19:10), in the semifinals against Anvar Yunusov , Tajikistan (18:13) and in the final against Luke Campbell , England (14:10) surprisingly the gold medal. With this success he also qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London .

At the end of 2011, Álvarez won the Pan-American Games with ease with a final victory against Óscar Valdez , Mexico (19:15).

In preparation for the Olympic Games, Álvarez took part in several tournaments in 2012 with the participation of other Olympic participants. So he suggested to his tournament win in Sofia Detelin Dalakliew , Bulgaria (10: 5) and Luke Campbell, England (16: 9), lost in Ústí against Vittorio Parrinello, Italy (11:14) and struck in Almaty Shiva Thapa , India ( 16+: 16) and lost to Kanat Abutalipov , Kazakhstan (17: 17+).

At the Olympic Games Álvarez won in the round of 16 against Joseph Diaz, USA (21:15), in the quarterfinals against Robenilson de Jesus , Brazil (16:11), but lost in the semifinals to the Irishman John Joe Nevin (19:14) and won thus the Olympic bronze medal. At the end of 2012, Álvarez lost in the final of the Cuban Championships against the Olympic champion Robeisy Ramírez, who had risen from the flyweight .

To avoid Ramírez, Álvarez started from 2013 in the lightweight (-60 kg) and won his first Cuban championship title. At the world championships in the same year he became world champion straight away. On the way to this title he suggested u. a. Sailom Adi , Thailand (3: 0), Berik Äbdirachmanow , Kazakhstan (2: 1), and Robson Conceição , Brazil (3: 0). The following year, Álvarez won the Central America and Caribbean Games in Veracruz with a final victory over the Mexican Lindolfo Delgado. He met this in the final of the Pan American Games 2015 in Toronto and was able to beat him again. In the same year he also won a silver medal at the Pan American Championships in Vargas . In the final he lost to Robson Conceição, Brazil (3-0).

In October 2015, Àlvarez won with Siegen a. a. over Elnur Abduraimov , Uzbekistan (3-0), and Albert Selimow , Russia (TKO 2nd round), the World Championships in Doha . With this success he qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games . There he reached the semi-finals and won bronze.

After winning the Pan American Championships in 2017 , he also took part in the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg , where he won silver after losing to Sofiane Oumiha in the final .

World Series of Boxing

With the first start of the Cuban boxing team as Cuba Domadores in the World Series of Boxing in the 2013/14 season, Lázaro Álvarez also fought in this world league. In his first season he won six of the seven fights in which he was used. He suffered the defeat in the final against the Azerbaijan Baku Fires . His opponent was Albert Selimow to whom he was defeated by 2: 1 judges' votes. The Cuba Domadores won the title despite this defeat.

In the 2015 season, Veitía won all seven fights in the regular season. He finished first in the ranking of his weight class this season. In the final fight between the Cuba Domadores and the Astana Arlans, Álvarez also won, but his team could not defend their title.
