Yordenis Ugás Hernández (born July 14, 1986 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban boxer . He was world champion of the amateurs in 2005 in the lightweight.

Career

amateur

Yordenis Ugás has been boxing since he was ten. He was motivated to do so by the great successes of a Félix Savón , whom he wanted to emulate as a boy. In the boxing club of the Los Olmos district, he found his first coach in Obelio Wilson, who led him to the top of Cuban junior boxers. Yordenis Ugás is now training in a performance center of the Cuban Boxing Association in Santiago de Cuba .

In 2000 he started in the weight class up to 38 kg body weight for the first time at the Cuban Junior Championship in Santiago de Cuba and immediately won the Cuban championship title with a victory over Rusky Rondon. He won this title in 2001, again in Santiago de Cuba, with a victory over Ivan Onate Lovit, but already in the weight class up to 48 kg body weight. In the same year he started at the Junior World Championship (Cadets) in Baku , but lost his first fight against the Russian Andrei Strelkow in the flyweight (Kl. Up to 51 kg body weight) and therefore remained unplaced.

In 2002 he was again Cuban junior champion in bantamweight (up to 54 kg body weight) with a victory over Yordanki Cluevas Jiménez. In a junior international fight towards the end of 2002 he won in Havana over Daniel Brizuela from Argentina on points.

The year 2003 began with a points win over Guillaume Salingue on the occasion of the junior international match between Cuba and France in Havana. In 2003 he took part for the first time in the Cuban Senior Championship in Holguin . He reached the featherweight final there, in which he was defeated on points by Yosvani Aguilera. Then Yordenis Ugás won in Volgograd at the tournament with the martial name "Battle of Stalingrad" the featherweight competition by victories over the Russians Andrei Strelkow, Andrei Mironow and Semen Grivotschew. After he had become Cuban junior champion again in Guantánamo with a point victory in featherweight over Elianis Viral, he started at the end of 2003 at the Junior World Championships in Bucharest . There he landed the following victories in featherweight: demolition winner in the 1st round over Tsai Yaw Chun, Taiwan , demolition winner in the 1st round over Armen Dalakjan, Armenia , abandonment winner 1st round over Baglan Shalayev, Azerbaijan , demolition winner 2nd round over Zahir Artikow , Uzbekistan and points winner over Artjom Subbotin, Russia (14: 5). This made him junior world champion in 2003 and landed his first major international success.

In 2004 Yordenis Ugás was the last Cuban junior featherweight champion and finished 3rd in the Cuban senior featherweight championship after losing points in the semifinals to Luis Franco . The defeat turned out to be extremely narrow, because with a tie of 13:13 the auxiliary hits had to be used to determine the result and Franco was the better with 65:54 hits. Luis Franco won at the II. Olimpiada del Deporte in Guantánamo, which is considered to be the championship victory, again over Yordenis Ugás, but this time only in the final. During the subsequent European tour of the Cuban national team, Yordenis Ugás won four times in four fights. He narrowly defeated the German Enrico Wagner in Berlin with 16:14 goals and won against his French rivals in Hyères , La-Teste-de-Buch and Guéret against Taschid Lakhlifi (twice, with 22:16 and 26:25) and Saber Bouziane (43:22). Yordenis Ugás then suffered a setback at the Featherweight Junior World Championship in Jeju / South Korea . After a demolition win in the 3rd round against Wadim Markow from Moldova , he lost in the next round against the Englishman Amir Khan clearly on points (6:21) and was eliminated.

In 2005, Yordenis Ugás was first Cuban featherweight champion in Pinar del Río by winning points over Raudel Sanchez . During the subsequent European trip of the Cuban national team, however, he suffered two surprising first-round defeats at the tournament in Ústí nad Labem and at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) . In Ústí nad Labem he lost to Enrico Wagner on points (16:18) and in Halle he was defeated by the Kazak Serik Säpijew on points. For this he won the next two tournaments in which he participated. In Cienfuegos he won the featherweight tournament with victories over Serik Scheylelow from Kazakhstan and Yurdenis González and Raudel Sanches from Cuba and at the "Batalla de Carabobo" in Valencia / Venezuela he won over Miguel Torres, Venezuela, Darley Pérez, Colombia and Danny Rodríguez Venezuela.

At the subsequent World Cup for national teams in Moscow , Yordenis Ugás represented Cuba in the lightweight. He completed the following fights: Point winner (45:21) over Pichal Soyotha, Thailand , third round winner over Gheorghe Popescu, Romania, point defeat against Serik Säpijew, Kazakhstan (34:46) and point winner over Murat Krachev, Russia (50:30 ). Then Yordenis Ugás won his first title at an international championship among seniors. He became the Pan-American featherweight champion in Teresopolis , Brazil . On the way to this title he defeated Jannie Sacramento from Brazil (26:13), Francisco Vargas from Mexico (24:11) and Rocardo García from the Dominican Republic (13: 5) each on points.

The crowning glory of 2005 was the senior world championships in Mianyang / China for Yordenis Ugás . He defeated Faidschulew Marufjon from Tajikistan (28:14), Asglar Ali Shar from Pakistan (28:14), Ibrahim Kamal from Canada (23:14), Baik Jong-Sub, South Korea (34:16), Khabib Alaschwerdiev from Russia (45:22) and in the final Romal Amanow from Azerbaijan (42:28) each safe on points and became world champion of the amateurs in the lightweight.

In 2006, a year without World Championships or Olympic Games, Yordenis Ugás won the Cuban lightweight championship in Cienfuegos with a victory in the final battle over Michel Sarria Mendez. In the subsequent championship victory, the III. Olimpiad del Delporte in Havana he defeated his old rival Raudel Sanchez in the final again on points. In Havana he came in an international match to a point victory over the Chinese Quing Hu. He also won the final of the AIBA Presidents Cup in Astana / Kazakhstan over Serik Scheleylow from Kazakhstan and was then the Central American lightweight champion in Cartagena de Indias in Colombia . He won the final battle over Oscar Diaz from the Dominican Republic on points (12: 3). 2006 ended with the World Cup for national teams in Baku . Yordenis Ugás was deployed there three times. He lost surprisingly clearly (14:24) on points against Berik Kalijew from Kazakhstan, then won against his final opponent of the 2005 World Cup Romal Amanow again clearly on points and also won over Maksim Ignatiev from Russia on points (24: 4).

The year 2007 began for Yordenis Ugás with another title win at the Cuban championship in Sancti Spíritus . In the final of the lightweight he defeated Rosniel Iglesias on points. With three victories, he then won the qualifying tournament for the Pan-American Championships in Barquisimeto / Venezuela to start these championships. In the final, he won it over Lisandor Bolivar from the Dominican Republic on points. On a subsequent trip to Europe, he won the international match against France in Amiens over Doauda Sow on points and won the Calais tournament with a point win in the final over Artur Schmidt from Germany. In Bucharest he then surprisingly lost in an international match against Romania against Florentin Niculescu on points. He was also unable to win the "Ahmet Comert" tournament in Istanbul , because after four victories in the final battle against Ocur Sipal from Turkey, he lost on points (13:17).

Returned to the American continent, Yordenis Ugás won the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro . In the lightweight he beat Darleys Pérez from Colombia (8: 4), Luis Rueda, Argentina (20: 7) and Everston Lopes, Brazil (21: 8) on points. At the subsequent World Championship in Chicago , Yordenis Ugás could not start. The reason for this was that at the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro his teammates and multiple world champions Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandi Lara wanted to break away from the team and go into exile. Under pressure from the Cuban ruler that Fidel Castro is said to have intervened personally, the Brazilian police arrested these two boxers on the flimsy reason that their visas had expired and deported them to Cuba after they had not submitted any asylum applications. There both were immediately banned from competing for life (both have since managed to escape abroad and start their professional careers). As a punishment for the behavior of Rigondeaux and Lara, the Cuban boxers were not allowed to participate in the world championships in Chicago. The reason given by Raul Castro's Cuban government was "security problems" for Cuban boxers in the United States. It should be noted that Cuban teams have boxed a lot in the United States and there have never been "security problems". In truth, it was probably the fear that more boxers would break away from the Cuban team. In any case, Yordenis Ugás was unable to defend his 2005 title in Chicago.

After this disappointment, he was again Cuban lightweight champion in Holguín in 2008 with a points win over Pablo de la Cruz. At the subsequent "Strandtja" tournament in Plovdiv he lost after victories over Yakup Kilic from Turkey (13: 8) and Ognian Kolew from Bulgaria (13: 6) in the final against Morey Ashkalov from Kazakhstan and "only" came second. Space. For this he won the qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , which took place in Port of Spain / Trinidad . He beat Sadam Ali from the United States in the final there on points (13: 5). Since the Cuban boxers are frequent starters, he then took part in the "Klitschko" tournament in Kiev and won it by beating Alexander Kljutschko from Ukraine in the final . At the Pan-American Championship in Cuenca / Ecuador , however, he had to be content with 2nd place. He won there first over Alexis Folledo from Ecuador, only to lose just on points in the final battle against Darleys Pérez from Colombia (9:10). The last tournament he played in 2008, he won again. In Ústí nad Labem he defeated David Müller from Germany, Rinat Agejew from Chechnya and Vladimir Magsumow from Russia, each on points.

Yordenis Ugás and his teammates prepared for the 2008 Olympic Games in a training camp in Ecuador . In Beijing he then won his first three fights, beating Hamza Kramou from Algeria on points (21: 3), won against the vice world champion of 2007 Domenico Valentino from Italy on points (10: 2) and also knocked out Georgian Popescu Romania on points (11: 7). In the semifinals he surprisingly lost against French Daouda Sow on points (8:15) and thus won a bronze medal .

In 2009 Ugás won the Cuban light welterweight championships again with a final victory over Roniel Iglesias (12: 9). However, not he, but Iglesias was nominated for the 2009 World Championships . Disappointed by this, Ugás moved to the USA in 2010.

professional

Having arrived in the USA, Ugás started a professional career, which got off to a very good start, but after eleven wins with a narrow defeat against Juan Garcia, USA (76:75, 76:75, 75:76), it suffered a first setback.
