Teresópolis , officially Município de Teresópolis , is a city in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . The population was estimated to be 182,594 as of July 1, 2019.
geography
The municipal area covered 770 km², in 2018 773.338 km² were given. The city is located 90 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro in the Serra dos Órgãos at an altitude of 870 meters above sea level. It is the highest city in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
history
The first European settlers were English who settled in the region around 1820. On the site of today's Teresópolis, there was a farm called Fazenda dos Órgãos at the beginning of the 19th century , around which a settlement was formed.
The settlement only experienced a certain boom when the railway line that touches Teresópolis was built. The city was only properly connected to the coast when highways were built into the mountains around Teresópolis. The place was initially called Sant'Ana do Paqueque (from Santo Antônio do Paquequer ), the territory was under the then Magé , which belonged to the province of Minas Gerais . The emancipation as a self-governing city and spin-off from Magé took place on July 6, 1891. It was named in honor of the last empress of Brazil, Teresa Maria Cristina of Naples-Sicily .
economy
The city lives primarily from agriculture. It is a leader in vegetable production and produces much of the vegetables consumed in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
There is also an emerging tourism that benefits from the mountain climate, the landscape and the location in the so-called Vale dos Gourmets , the “Valley of Gourmets ”. The Grupo Petrópolis runs a large brewery here .
Storm 2011
The area around the city was the scene of heavy rains on January 11, 2011, which fell in the area around Petrópolis , Teresópolis and Nova Friburgo , triggering mudslides that killed hundreds of people. The water level of the Rio da Posse river , which flows through the Posse district , rose by five meters within a short time.
