At the USA Championship in 2006, however, he was defeated in the quarterfinals against Luis Del Valle and finished 5th. Sadam Ali made his first appearance in an international championship at the Junior World Championship in Agadir in 2006 . He won there over Yavheni Ramaschkewitsch from Belarus (22:12) and Paul Turcitu from Romania (27:12) on points, but lost in the quarter-finals to Yordan Frometa Gendry from Cuba just on points (39:41) and thus finished 5th. Space.

In 2007 Sadam Ali won the National Golden Goves title again, but this time in the lightweight with a points win over Stan Martyniouk. At the USA Championship in 2007 he was eliminated early in the quarterfinals by a narrow point defeat against Jerry Belmontes . But then he won the US Olympic Trials in Houston in August 2007 in the lightweight. He won over Terence Crawford (17:12), Miguel Gonzales (23:13), Jerry Belmontes (32:23) and Miguel Gonzalez on points.

At the 2007 World Cup in Chicago , Sadam Ali initially won against José Pedraza from Puerto Rico on points (25:17), but lost in the round of 32 against Hravchik Javakhjan from Armenia on points (16:20) and was eliminated. He was far more successful in the subsequent test tournament for the Olympic Games in Beijing . After this tournament, a three-country match USA - Kazakhstan - China took place in Zunyi / China . Before this tournament, doping tests were taken and Sadam Ali's sample was positive. Traces of the forbidden substance "cathine" were found in his blood. Usually such a finding results in a two-year ban from all national and international fights. Sadam Ali managed to convince the international boxing federation AIBA that because of an injury in Zunyi he had to take a drug that had been mistakenly mixed with a drug that contained cathine. The AIBA then reduced the ban to three months. This expired on February 22, 2008.

Sadam Ali was therefore able to take part in the first American qualification tournament in Port of Spain / Trinidad , where he won the ticket to Beijing with victories over Jesus Cuadro from Venezuela and Juan Nicolas Cuellas from Argentina . The defeat in the final of this tournament against Yordenis Ugás from Cuba (5:13) no longer played a role for the Olympic qualification.
