Georgian Popescu (born October 20, 1984 in Ploieşti , Romania ) is a former Romanian boxer . He took part in the 2008 Olympic Games as a lightweight .

Career

Georgian Popescu started boxing at the age of twelve. At the European Championships in 2006 in Plovdiv , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Dmytro Bulenkov. He also failed in the round of 16 at the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool 4: 5 against Wasgen Safarjanz and at the 2010 European Championships in Moscow against Hratschik Jawachjan .

At the first European Olympic qualification tournament in Pescara in 2008 , he defeated Tomas Vaňo and Ognian Koljew before losing to Miklós Varga . He then started at the second European Olympic qualification tournament in Athens , where he secured a starting place for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing with wins against Alexandros Kirsanidis, Ramal Amanov and Krzysztof Szot . At the Olympic Games, he then surprisingly won the lightweight against Sadam Ali and Francisco Vargas , before losing 7:11 to Yordenis Ugás in the quarterfinals .

At the 2008 World Cup in Moscow , he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against José Pedraza .
