José Pedraza (born May 8, 1989 in Caguas ) is a Puerto Rican professional boxer , former IBF world champion in super featherweight and former WBO world champion in lightweight. As an amateur, he was, among other things, an Olympic competitor from 2008 and Vice World Champion from 2009 in the lightweight division.

Amateur career

José Pedraza boxed as an amateur lightweight (up to 60 kg) and started in 2007 at the Pan American Games , where he won a bronze medal after a semi-final defeat against Éverton Lopes , Brazil . He then took part in the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , where he failed in the first fight against Sadam Ali , USA.

In 2008 he was able to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing at the American elimination tournament by winning against Omar Ward, Barbados , Juan Cuellar, Argentina , Alexis Folleco, Ecuador , and this time also Éverton Lopes . In addition, José Pedraza was the master of Puerto Rico from 2007 to 2010.

Professional career

Pedraza made his professional debut on February 18, 2011 in Puerto Rico under the promoter Lou DiBella . After 18 wins in a row, he boxed in an IBF title elimination against Michael Fareñas (balance: 39-4) from the Philippines in November 2014 and won unanimously on points.

On June 13, 2015, he boxed in the Bartow Arena in Birmingham (Alabama) against the Russian Andrei Klimow (19-1) for the vacant IBF world super featherweight title and won unanimously on points. In 2015 and 2016 he successfully defended the title against Edner Cherry (34-6) and Stephen Smith (23-1). On January 14, 2017, he lost the title in his third defense by a premature loss in the seventh round to Gervonta Davis (16-0).

After not fighting a fight for 13 months, he signed a contract with promoter Bob Arum in February 2018 and switched to lightweight. After a build-up victory against the Mexican Antonio Moran (23-2), Pedraza became the mandatory challenger of the WBO world champion Raymundo Beltrán (35-7). He received this chance due to the health exit of the Russian Roman Andreev, who was intended for the fight. The duel was played on August 25, 2018 at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona , with Pedraza winning unanimously on points.

On December 8, 2018, he lost the world title in Madison Square Garden unanimously on points to Wassyl Lomatschenko (11-1). He suffered another defeat in September 2019 against Jose Zepeda (30-2).
