Edgar Raymundo "Ray" Beltrán (born July 23, 1981 in Los Mochis , Sinaloa ) is a Mexican professional boxer and former WBO lightweight world champion .

Private

Raymundo Beltrán was born in Mexico and immigrated illegally to the United States as a teenager, where he settled in Phoenix , Arizona . He is married and has three children. He has a P1 visa for competitive athletes, which enables him to box in the USA until 2020. Afterwards, as an “exceptional athlete”, he would have the chance to obtain permanent residence status through a Green Card (EB1) .

Career

Raymundo Beltrán began his professional career in Arizona in 1999 , but boxed in Mexico and Panama in the years that followed . He got his first World Cup chance on September 7, 2013 in Scotland , when he reached a draw against WBO title holder Ricky Burns , which Burns remained title holder. Burns struggled with a broken jaw from lap two and suffered a knockdown on lap eight.

On November 29, 2014 Beltrán boxed against the new WBO title holder Terence Crawford again for the world championship belt, but lost unanimously on points. He received a third chance for the title on May 1, 2015 in the fight for the vacant WBO title against Takahiro Aō . Beltrán won the fight by TKO in the second round, but had exceeded the weight limit and tested positive for stanozolol , which is why he was not named the new world champion.

On February 16, 2018, he finally defeated Paulus Moses in the fight for the vacant WBO title unanimously on points. His first title defense took place on August 25, 2018 against José Pedraza , with Beltrán lost unanimously on points. After a subsequent win against the undefeated Japanese Hiroki Okada, he received another lightweight World Championship chance on June 28, 2019. However, since he could not keep the weight limit, it was only for his opponent Richard Commey for the IBF title. Beltrán lost in this fight by knockout in the eighth round.
