Richard Commey (* 10. March 1987 in Accra , Ghana ) is a Ghanaian boxer in the lightweight and current world champion of the organization International Boxing Federation (IBF). He is trained by Andre Rozier , who also trains Daniel Jacobs , Sadam Ali , Serhiy Derevianchenko and Chris Algieri , among others .

Professional career

In 2011 Commey successfully started his professional career. In 2013 he won the vacant African championship with a knockout victory in round 8 over Prince Ofotsu. He won the vacant Commonwealth Championship in the summer of 2014 when he defeated Briton Gary Buckland by a unanimous judge at York Hall in London , England . On March 14 of the following year he defended this title in a fight against Thompson Mokwana by technical knockout. In May of the same year, the left wingman beat the Uzbek Bahodir Mamadjonov also by TKo and thus won the vacant IBF Inter-Continental belt.

In September 2016, Commey boxed against the American Robert Easter for the vacant IBF World Championship and lost by split point decision.

The following year he competed against Hedi Slimani in Accra for the vacant international title of the World Boxing Council (WBC for short) and won over 12 rounds on points.

On February 2, 2019, Commey was allowed to box again for the vacant IBF World Championship title. The fight took place in the USA , opponent was the Russian Isa Chaniev . Commey took his chance this time; he knocked out Chaniev already in the second round and became world champion of the IBF association.
