In April 2008 he switched to the professional boxing camp without amateur preparation and won each of his 15 fights by 2013. His rise began with a win in a match broadcast on NBC Sports against Jose Alejo (record: 10-1). Then he also defeated the experienced Mike Arnaoutis (24-8) and the highly rated Emmanuel Taylor (17-1) on ESPN .

Undefeated in 19 professional fights, he entered the ring on June 14, 2014 in Brooklyn to fight for the WBO world light welterweight championship against Russian title holder Ruslan Prowodnikow (23-2). Algieri stood out in this fight for its extraordinary ability to take. He went down twice in the first lap and suffered severe swelling in his right eye. As the fight continued, his right eye swelled shut, he also suffered a bleeding nose injury and a cut in his right eye. After the full twelve rounds, he won not least because of his numerically superior hit ratio.

In November 2014 he lost to Manny Pacquiao (56-5) on points and suffered six knockdowns in the fight. He had to give up his world light welterweight title as a prerequisite for the fight against Pacquiao in advance.
