The first karate organizations such as the WAKO , the WKA or the PKA came into being in the early 1970s . At the beginning all martial arts were called karate , until later a more precise differentiation was made, e.g. B. in Thai boxing , kickboxing or K-1 .

After various disputes in the Professional Karate Association (PKA), the ISKA was founded in 1985 by former PKA members. The first director was Mike Sawyer. The ISKA was able to establish itself quickly, and those responsible managed to address a large audience with the US TV broadcaster ESPN . ESPN previously had a TV contract with the PKA.

Every summer, ISKA holds the US Open ISKA World Martial Arts Championships in Disneyworld . It is considered to be one of the largest martial arts events worldwide.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain , the ISKA was the first kickboxing association to spread to Eastern Europe .

In 2012 the martial arts event Steko's Fight Night was carried out according to the rules of the ISKA world association. The Steko's Fight Night is the largest kickboxing event in Germany.
