The Professional Karate Association (PKA) was one of the first world karate associations. It was founded in 1974 by Don Quine, Judy Quine and Mike Anderson in Los Angeles and had the goal of holding full contact karate world championships. Various other large organizations such as the WKA (1976) or the ISKA (1985) emerged from the PCA .

history

Immediately after its establishment in 1974, the PKA organized annual karate world championships . Between 1974 and 1985 it was the most famous karate organization. The PKA was the first world association to set up rules for full contact karate. According to PKA rules, kicks were only allowed above the belt line. In 1976 the former PKA members Arnold Urquidez and Howard Hansen split the World Kickboxing and Karate Association from it . The PKA had television contracts with CBS , NBC and until 1986 with ESPN in the late 1980s . After three years of internal disputes, Joe Corley took over the rights to this world martial arts association in an out-of-court settlement in 1989. In 1985, however, dissatisfied PKA members founded the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA), also as a reaction to financial problems in the PKA. From 1986 the ISKA got the exclusive TV contract with the ESPN. From then on, the PCA lost its importance. Today other martial arts associations such as the World Kickboxing and Karate Union or the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations have taken on the importance that the PKA once had. The most famous PKA fighters were Bill Wallace , Joe Lewis , Benny Urquidez , Howard Jackson , Tom Hall, Jeff Smith, Rick Roufus and Bob Thunder Thurman. At the first World Cup in Los Angeles in 1974 , the winners Bill Wallace, Jeff Smith and Joe Lewis each received a prize of $ 3,000.
