World Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Meeting of two world champions:
Nico Rosberg (Formula 1) and Lukas Podolski (soccer) with their World Cup trophies.

A world championship ( WM ) denotes sporting competitions held on a global level for individual athletes or national teams , mostly in tournament form , which are held by the respective world sports federation and for which the participating athletes or teams usually have to qualify in continental qualification competitions or at national level. The plural world championships designates competitions in which several winners are determined, e.g. B. in several disciplines in athletics or in different weight classes in wrestling . The winners determined at the end bear the title of world champion , which is awarded by the respective sports association. In individual areas there are several bodies that do not recognize each other or only partially recognize each other (e.g. bodybuilding , boxing , wrestling and dance sports ), from which world championships in the same sport are sometimes held independently of each other. The counterpart for club sport is the world cup . This title is only valid until the next World Cup.

meaning

The World Championship with the world's greatest importance is the soccer World Cup of FIFA , which is due to the unique worldwide popularity of the sport.

The volleyball world championship , rugby union world championship and basketball world championship are not as important as the soccer competition, but nevertheless with great interest on all continents . Above all, the number of spectators at rugby union can best keep up with those in football.

In Europe, the ice hockey world championship and the handball world championship also have many fans, but outside of the old continent, with the exception of Arabia in handball and North America in ice hockey, there is little interest in these competitions. The baseball world championship is very popular in Latin America and East Asia , and baseball is also one of the three greatest sports in the world. The World Cricket Championship is practically only seen in the Commonwealth of Nations.

The American Football World Championship , the Hockey World Championship , the Lacrosse World Championship and the Rugby League World Championship experience significant interest only in the host cities and the participating countries. In addition to team sports, the world championship fights in martial arts, especially boxing, and in motorsport, the Formula 1 world championship , the world rally championship , the touring car world championship and the motorcycle world championship have a large number of spectators on site and on the television sets .

But there are many lesser-known world championships in fringe sports or rare games and activities, such as mumbling , grilling or plowing and in individual professions also professional world championships, for example with the hairdressers .
