World Badminton Federation

The World Badminton Federation (WBF) was a former world association in the sport of badminton and emerged from the International Badminton Federation , now known as the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

history

The World Badminton Federation was founded on February 24, 1978 in Hong Kong by 13 Asian and 6 African associations. The number of members increased to 22 through the subsequent admission of three further nations. The association included: Bangladesh , Brunei , the non-IBF member China , Ghana , Guyana , Hong Kong , India , Iran , Kenya , Malaysia , Mauritius , Nepal , Nigeria , North Korea , Pakistan , the Philippines , Singapore , South Korea , Sri Lanka , Tanzania , Thailand and Zambia . Austria , France , Mexico (representing the Pan American Badminton Confederation ), Sweden , the FRG and Yugoslavia sent non-voting observers to the founding assembly . The reason for the split from the IBF were ambiguities in the treatment of Taiwan and South Africa as well as in the voting rights of the individual national associations. Previously, the African Badminton Federation had withdrawn from the IBF due to the recognition of South Africa. During the time of its existence the WBF hosted two world championships, one in Bangkok in 1978 and one in Hangzhou in 1979. After changes in the voting system, the renaming of the Taiwanese association to the Chinese Taipei Badminton Association and the non-participation of South Africa in Thomas and Uber Cups and world championships the IBF could be assured, the reunion of IBF and WBF took place on May 26, 1981.
