history
World Championship
When they first participated in France in 1956 , the team from the Federal Republic did not get past 24th and thus last place. In 1966 in Czechoslovakia , the West Germans were hardly more successful in 20th place. While the GDR became world champions four years later, the DVV team did not qualify for the world championship until reunification. In 1994 the team of the now united Germany qualified for a world championship for the first time. In Greece it was enough for ninth place. The following tournaments Germany only experienced as a spectator. This lull only ended in 2006 when Stelian Moculescu's team qualified for the World Cup in Japan . There the men started with four wins in the first four games more successfully than expected. After an intermediate round without a win, they finally came in ninth. The German men with national coach Raúl Lozano achieved a better placement at the 2010 World Cup in Italy with eighth place. In January 2014 they qualified for the World Cup in Poland . There she won the bronze medal with a victory in the game for third place against France . It was the first World Cup medal for a German team since 1970. Germany failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup .
European Championship
Three European Championship tournaments have already taken place in Berlin (1983, 1991 and 2003). As runners-up in the group, the DVV selection managed to qualify for the 2007 European Championship in Russia in a playoff round against the Czech Republic . There the Germans failed in the second group stage. At the 2009 European Championships in Turkey, the German men finished sixth, and at the 2011 European Championships in the Czech Republic they were eliminated as the bottom of the group in the preliminary round. In 2013 in Poland and Denmark , Germany came in sixth again and in 2015 in Bulgaria and Italy the German team came eighth. At the 2017 European Championship in Poland , she reached the final with a 3-2 win against Serbia and thus secured her first medal at a European Championship. Germany then lost the final against Russia in a tie-break. At the EM 2019 , the DVV selection was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Poland .
Olympic games
The Federal Republic of Germany qualified as hosts for the first time in 1972 in Munich and ended up in eleventh place. After the tournament in their own country, Germany had to wait 36 years for the next participation in the Olympic Games. On May 25, 2008, the national team qualified for the tournament in Beijing by winning the tournament in Düsseldorf . There the DVV selection managed only one victory against Egypt , which is why they were eliminated after the preliminary round and finished ninth. In 2012 the German volleyball players again managed to qualify for the Olympics after beating the Czech Republic 3-1. In London , the German men reached the quarter-finals after two preliminary round victories over Serbia and Tunisia , in which they lost 3-0 to Bulgaria . In qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games, they lost to Poland in the final. In the 2020 qualification, too , they only had to admit defeat in the last game against France.
World cup
The Federal Republic took tenth place at the 1969 tournament that took place in Berlin. In 1991 Germany took part in the World Cup for the last time so far and achieved fourth place.
Nations League
In the Nations League in 2018 occupied Germany ranked ninth. In 2019 she finished the competition in 14th place overall.
World league
From 1992 to 1994 and 2001 to 2003, Germany took part in the World League three times in a row . However, the German team never got beyond the preliminary round. After a break of six years, Germany took part in the World League again in 2010 and 2011 and was eliminated from the preliminary round with a good second and third place. In 2012 , the German men qualified for the final round for the first time, in which they reached fifth place. In 2013 , the team reached eighth place. In the 2014 World League , Germany retired as third party after the preliminary round.
European League
At the premiere of the Europa League in 2004 , Germany finished fourth. After two fifth places in 2005 and 2006 , the DVV men took sixth place in 2007 . In the 2008 competition , after winning the group (against Austria , Turkey and Belarus ), the team, mostly with a B selection, reached the Final Four, in which the Germans only came fourth after losing to Slovakia and host Turkey. In 2009 they managed to win the Europa League for the first time. In the final, the DVV team defeated Spain 3-2.
European Games
At the first European Games in 2015 in Baku , the German volleyball players won the gold medal after beating Bulgaria 3-1 in the final .
