European Volleyball League 2009

The 2009 season of the European Volleyball League was the sixth edition of the competition. The competition for the women's national teams took place for the first time. The men played from June 5th to July 19th. The German team won the title for the first time in the final against Spain. The women played from May 22nd to July 12th and Serbia became the first winner with a win against Turkey.

The preliminary round was held in three groups, each with four teams. On one weekend, the teams played twice in one place, so that there were a total of six home and six away games for each team. The three group winners qualified alongside hosts Portugal for the Final Four.

Final Four

The Final Four took place on July 18th and 19th in Portimão ( Portugal ). In the semifinals, Spain prevailed against the defending champions and Germany defeated Portugal in three sets. The hosts then secured third place. In the final, the DVV selection defeated the Spaniards 3-2 and won the European league for the first time.

Final Four

The Final Four took place on July 11th and 12th in Kayseri ( Turkey ). In the semifinals, the two group winners of the preliminary round prevailed. The Bulgarians took third place after beating France. Serbia won the final against the hosts with a 17:15 tiebreak and became the first winner of the competition.
