At the first volleyball world championship in 1952, the Bulgarians took fourth place. After fifth place in 1956, they repeated this result in 1962. At the EC 1970, despite the home advantage, they did not get beyond sixth place. In 1974 the crash followed in 13th place. After that, the Bulgarian women finished ninth twice and in 1986 they said goodbye for the time being in twelfth place. They returned in 1998 in eleventh place and four years later they finished eighth.

European championships

In 1950 the European volleyball championship took place in Bulgaria and the hosts just missed the medal ranks as fourth. From 1955 to 1963, Bulgarian women took fifth place three times. After finishing sixth in 1967, they finished fourth twice. A weaker tournament (seventh) was followed in 1979 by the leap into the top three. When the tournament took place in their own country again in 1981, the Bulgarians won the final against the Soviet Union . After that, the performance fluctuated. First the Bulgarians were fourth, then tenth, then fourth again and twice seventh. Between 1993 and 1997 they rose from ninth place to fourth place. In 1999 they finished seventh and in 2001 they reached third place - again in front of their own audience. The next three tournaments went down continuously to eleventh place in 2007 .
