World championships
In 1949 Czechoslovakia hosted the first volleyball world championship and was defeated by the Soviet Union in the final . The same result came in 1952 in the Soviet Union. In 1956 Czechoslovakia became world champions for the first time against Romania . In the next two tournaments, the defending champion had to give up again to the Soviets. In 1966 the Czechoslovaks won the second title at home and again against Romania. After that, they didn't make it into the top three. It went down through fourth and fifth place to ninth.

At the first tournament in Tokyo in 1964 , Czechoslovakia had the greatest Olympic success. She just had to admit defeat to the Soviet Union and won silver. At the 1968 tournament there was a bronze medal. Then it was enough to place six ( 1972 ), five ( 1976 ) and seven ( 1980 ).
European championships
Czechoslovakia became the first European volleyball champion in 1948 . Two years later, the defending champion was defeated in the final of the Soviet Union. After the missed tournament in 1951, the Czechoslovaks won two more titles in 1955 and 1958 against Romania, one against the host and once in front of their own audience. In 1963 they were only fifth, but in 1967 and 1971 they were again in the final against the Soviets. This was followed by three sixth places as well as fourth and fifth, before the fourth final defeat in 1985 against the big rival from the east.
