history
World championships
When they first participated in a volleyball world championship , the Dutch women finished tenth in 1956. After that, the results got continuously worse up to 17th place in 1978. Four years later, the Netherlands were only one place better. In 1990 they made it to the top ten for the first time in ninth place and then stayed between seventh and ninth place.
Olympic games
The Dutch women took part in the 1992 Olympic tournament in Barcelona for the first time and came in sixth. At the 1996 Games , they improved to fifth. After that, they could no longer qualify, and they were not there either in Beijing in 2008 or in London in 2012 .
European championships
At the first European volleyball championship , the Dutch women took the last of seven places and in 1951 they were fifth out of six teams. When the number of participants increased, they only got tenth place in 1958. Then they improved to seventh place in 1967, before going down again (eleventh in 1975). A renewed upswing led to sixth place in 1979 and 1983 the Netherlands were again eleventh. At the European Championships in their own country in 1985 they came third. After finishing fifth in 1987 and a missed tournament, they reached the 1991 final against the Soviet Union . A weaker tournament followed (seventh), but when the title fights took place again in 1995 in front of their own audience, the Dutch women won their first continental title against Croatia . The title defense failed in ninth place. From 1999 to 2007 the Dutch women finished fifth four times, only in 2003 they were even better when they just lost the game for third place against Germany . In 2009 they became vice European champion, while in 2011 and 2013 only seventh and ninth place respectively were achieved.
World cup
The Dutch women have played in the World Cup once and finished eighth in 1995.
World Grand Prix
During World Grand Prix , the Dutch women in 1994 were the first time there and reached the ninth. In 1996 and 1997 they rose to seventh and sixth. Two years later, they took eighth place. In 2003 they came back successfully as fourth. After finishing sixth in 2005, they won the competition in 2007. The Dutch women finished fourth in 2009 and seventh in 2010. After a two-year break, in 2013 they only ended up in twelfth place.
