Hans Wendler

Hans Wendler (born July 16, 1905 in Berlin ; † January 19, 1989 ) was a German steam locomotive designer .

He further developed the technically complex pulverized lignite firing system for steam locomotives , which had been known since the 1920s, after 1945. In the Wendler system, later named after him, the dust is conveyed from the closed tender into the locomotive using compressed air, supported by the suction of the working locomotive. As a result, it was possible to burn low-quality coal with relatively low-maintenance technology while protecting the locomotive personnel and still achieve performance comparable to hard coal. Hard coal was only available in small quantities in the GDR and the areas that supplied the Reichsbahn before 1945 ( Ruhr area , Upper Silesia ) were cut off by the new borders.

Over 110 locomotives of the series 17 , 44 , 52 and 58 were converted . The locomotives were thought to be very susceptible to repairs. In addition, further operating systems for the production and storage of lignite dust had to be kept in the railway depot.

In the course of the conversion from steam to diesel and electric locomotives, the steam locomotives were decommissioned.

life and work

Hans Wendler gained his first experience with pulverized coal firing in the 1930s in the Borsig locomotive factory . In 1945 he was commissioned to get the Berlin subway running again. In 1948, with the help of Soviet friends in the military administration, he succeeded in convincing those responsible at the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the feasibility of pulverized lignite firing. From 1949, around 110 steam locomotives in the GDR were converted to the Wendler pulverized lignite firing system in the Stendal Reichsbahn repair shop.

Hans Wendler was a national prize winner and received other prestigious awards from the GDR. In 1983 he received an honorary doctorate from the "Friedrich List" university of transport in Dresden.

The BSG Eintracht "Hans Wendler" Stendal was named after him.
