The Serbian national volleyball team is a selection of the best Serbian women players who represent the Serbian Volleyball Association (Odbojkaški Savez Srbije) at international tournaments and internationals. It is the successor to the Yugoslav national team , which played until 1993, and the Serbian-Montenegrin national team , which represented the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1993 to 2003 and then Serbia and Montenegro from 2003 to 2006 . Kosovo has had its own national team since 2016 .

history

World championships

When they first took part in a world championship after becoming self-employed, the Serbs reached the second group stage and eighth place in 2010 . At the 2014 World Cup , they also made it to the second round and finished in seventh place. They reached the final in Japan in 2018 and became world champions for the first time with a win against Italy .

Olympic games

In 2008 in Beijing , Serbia took part in the Olympic tournament for the first time and finished fifth after losing in the quarter-finals to Cuba . In 2012 in London they were eliminated from the preliminary round without a win. At the 2016 tournament in Rio de Janeiro, however, they were only defeated in the final against China and thus won the silver medal. They secured their starting place for Tokyo 2020 at an international qualifying tournament in Wroclaw .

European championships

At the 2007 European Championship , the Serbians took part for the first time after becoming self-employed and reached the final, which they lost to Italy. Two years later they came in seventh place. At the EM 2011 they won the final against the German team as hosts and became European champions. In 2013 they had to admit defeat in the game for third place against Belgium . In 2015 they finished third with a win against Turkey . At the 2017 tournament , the Serbian women became European champions for the second time by beating the Netherlands in the final . In 2019 they succeeded in defending their title in the final against Turkey.

World cup

The Serbians took fifth place at the 2007 World Cup . In 2011 they finished seventh. At the 2015 tournament , they only had to admit defeat in the final against China. In 2019 , however, they did not get past ninth place.

Nations League

In the Nations League 2018 , the Serbians reached the final round, in which they lost both games. At the 2019 tournament , they only came in 13th place.

World Grand Prix

The Serbians took part in the World Grand Prix for the first time in 2011 and came third. They finished eleventh the following year before coming back to third in 2013. This was followed by two eighth and one seventh place. At the last edition in 2017, Serbia came third again.

European League

Serbia won the first edition of the European League in 2009 in the final against Turkey. In 2010 against Bulgaria and a year later again against the Turks, two more titles followed. In 2012 the Serbians came third. When they last participated, they came in fifth in 2013 .
