2009 European Women's Volleyball Championship
The 2009 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place in Poland from September 25th to October 4th, 2009 . The European champion was Italy, which lost only two sets in the entire tournament and was thus able to defend its title. The German team missed a medal in the game for third place against the hosts.

The tournament began with a preliminary round in four groups (A – D) with four teams each. The top three teams in each group reached the second round. There two groups of six (E and F) were formed, whereby the results from the direct duels of the first round were adopted. The two best teams of the two groups reached the semi-finals, whereby the lot decided which group winner met which group runner-up. The losers in the semi-finals played for third place, the winners determined the new European champion in the final.

First round
In Group A, the Netherlands managed to win the group ahead of the hosts without losing a set. Spain secured third place with a narrow win against Croatia in their last game. The German women suffered a 3-0 defeat in their first game against Italy. Then they succeeded against France and against Turkey they won after 2-1 deficit, so that they finished second in the group behind the unbeaten Italians. Russia only lost two sets in the last Group B game against Belgium. The Belgians were previously only defeated against Bulgaria in the tiebreak and reached the next round as third in the group. In the table of group D, behind the sovereign winner Serbia, three teams showed four points and the same set ratio, so that the ball point quotient had to decide in favor of Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic.

Second round
The Netherlands remained on the first two match days of Group E against the competitors from the preliminary round Group C without losing a set. The Polish women also have two wins. Russia managed to take the lead against the Netherlands, but lost 3-2 and thus missed the semi-finals as Poland subsequently defeated Bulgaria and finished second.
In Group F, Italy continued their triumphant advance and were also successful against the opponents in the intermediate round in three sets. After beating the Czech Republic, the German women won the decisive game against World Cup third Serbia in the tie-break. With the clear success against Azerbaijan, the DVV selection finally reached the semi-finals as second in the group.

Final round
All games in the final round took place in Łódź . In the first semifinals, as in the preliminary round, the Dutch beat hosts Poland. Then the German team had to play again against the Italians, to whom they had already been defeated at the start of the tournament. Italy also prevailed in the semifinals and reached the final. There the decision was made again in three sentences. Germany previously lost the game for third place against the host's team.

Germany played with: Kathleen Weiß , Heike Beier , Maren Brinker , Lenka Dürr , Sabrina Roß , Christiane Fürst , Corina Ssuschke , Kathy Radzuweit , Margareta Kozuch , Anne Matthes , Sarah Petrausch , Lena Möllers , Lisa Thomsen and Kerstin Tzscherlich . The coach was Giovanni Guidetti .
Awards
Germany missed a medal, but was able to win three individual awards with Kozuch, Fürst and Tzscherlich. The new European champions Italy are also represented with three players in the list of the best, but the most valuable player was chosen from the defeated finalists. Host Poland was particularly successful when serving.

Venues
The games were played in Łódź , Wroclaw , Bydgoszcz and Katowice . The Atlas Arena in Łódź has already hosted world league games and, as the largest venue for the European Championship, offered space for 13,400 spectators. The Centennial Hall in Wroclaw in 1913 for the centenary of the Battle of Leipzig built and is on the list of since 2006 UNESCO World Heritage Site . At the European Championship, 7,000 spectators were able to watch the games in the historic building. The Łuczniczka multi-purpose hall with a capacity of 8,000 is home to two volleyball clubs and the venue for various international volleyball competitions. Numerous different sports competitions and concerts have already taken place in the Spodek in Katowice, which can accommodate 12,000 spectators.

All matches involving the German and some other games were in free live stream with the Internet channel laola1.tv transmitted. The organizer also reported with its own account on Twitter .
qualification
In addition to host Poland (also fourth in the last European Championship), the teams that finished one to seven at the 2007 European Championship were automatically qualified. These were defending champions Italy , vice Serbia , third Russia , fifth Netherlands , sixth Germany and seventh Belgium .
In six groups of four teams each, 24 teams played for the remaining nine places in May and June 2008. The group winners qualified directly, the runners-up had to contest an additional playoff round with a return leg.
At the Group A tournaments , which took place in Cherkassy and Kakanj , Slovakia was able to prevail over Ukraine , Bosnia and Portugal without a home advantage .
In Group B , which played in Maribor and Opava , the Czech Republic remained unbeaten against Slovenia , Albania and Moldova .
In Group C , Spain managed to win the group ahead of Azerbaijan , Romania and Macedonia at the games in Buzău and Cáceres .
France only gave one set in Group D and qualified in Mahiljou and Nancy ahead of Belarus , Hungary and Austria .
In Group E , Bulgaria, with a home advantage in Gabrovo, were unbeaten first, ahead of second hosts Croatia ( Zagreb ) as well as Estonia and Finland .
The Turkey won the Group F in Netanya and Giannitsa against Greece , Israel and Montenegro .
In the playoff games in September 2008 Belarus beat Slovenia 3-1 and 3-0 as did Azerbaijan against Greece. Croatia won the second leg 3-1 after losing 3-2 to Ukraine.
