European Women's Volleyball Championship 1983

The 1983 women's volleyball championship took place in the GDR from September 17th to 25th . The games were played in Rostock , Cottbus and Schwerin . The hosts were the first German team to become European champions.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into three groups of four in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up were combined into one group in the final round. In the mode “everyone against everyone” they determined the tournament winner. The remaining teams played for positions seven to twelve. Results from teams that met in the preliminary round were carried over to the final round.

Final round

The GDR became European champions with Maike Arlt , Grit Jensen , Ramona Landgraf , Heike Lehmann , Ariane Radfan , Silke Schott (all SC Dynamo Berlin), Monika Beu (TSC Berlin), Andrea Heim , Cathrin Heydrich , Karla Mügge , Ute Oldenburg and Martina Schwarz (all SC Traktor Schwerin) '. The trainer was Dieter Grund .

The Federal Republic of Germany took fifth place with Beate Bühler , Almut Kemperdick , Angela Liebelt , Terry Place-Brandel , Renate Riek , Regina Vossen , Gudrun Witte (all SV Lohhof), Gabi Lorenz (TG Rüsselsheim), Danuta Niemietz (TG Viktoria Augsburg) , Christa Schubert , Sigrid Terstegge (both USC Münster) and Marina Staden (VfL Oythe). The coach was Andrzej Niemczyk .

qualification

The GDR was set as the host. The top five teams from the 1981 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were Bulgaria as the defending champions, the second Soviet Union , the third Hungary , the fifth Poland and the sixth Czechoslovakia .

Six other teams reached the finals through qualifying tournaments held in April and May. In Group A, the Federal Republic and the Netherlands prevailed against Finland , Norway and Belgium . In Group B, which played in Vienna , Italy and France were successful against Yugoslavia , Austria and Switzerland . Group C is qualified Romania and Sweden .
