The 1979 European men's volleyball championship took place in France from October 5th to 12th . Germany was represented by the GDR team among the twelve participants. The games took place in Paris , Nantes , Saint-Quentin and Toulouse . The Soviet Union became European champions for the fifth time in a row.

First there was a preliminary round, in which the twelve teams were divided into three groups of four. The two best teams in each group played in the final group "everyone against everyone" for the title. The remaining teams played for positions seven to twelve. Results from teams that met in the preliminary round were carried over to the final round.

France was set to host. The top five teams from the 1977 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as defending champions, the second Poland , the third Romania , the fourth Hungary and the fifth Bulgaria .
Fourteen teams played in three groups for six more places in the finals. In group A, Italy and the GDR prevailed. Group B won Czechoslovakia and Greece , while Germany was only third. In Group C, Yugoslavia and Belgium were successful.
