1989 European men's volleyball championship

The 1989 European men's volleyball championship took place in Sweden from September 23 to October 1 . Germany was represented among the twelve participants with the GDR and the German selection . The games took place in Stockholm and Örebro . Italy won the title for the first time.

mode

First there was a preliminary round, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The two best teams in each group reached the semi-finals. The third and fourth place in the table played for places five to eight, the remaining teams for places nine to twelve.

qualification

Sweden was set as the host. The top three teams at the 1987 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as defending champions, France second and Greece third .

18 teams played in four groups for eight more places. The two best teams in each group qualified for the finals.
