The Polish men's national volleyball team is the selection of the best Polish players who represent the Polish Federation (Polski Związek Piłki Siatkowej) in international tournaments and internationals.
history
World Championship
The Poles finished fourth in the first volleyball world championship in 1949. After seventh place in 1952 , they were fourth again in the next two tournaments. From 1962 to 1970 two sixth places and one fifth place followed. In 1974 in Mexico the Poles became world champions for the first time with a final victory against the Soviet Union . In the following three tournaments they came in eighth, sixth and ninth. Then they missed the World Cup in 1990 and 1994. In 1998 they were eliminated in the preliminary round, which meant the worst World Cup result with 17th place. In 2002 they got into the second group stage and ninth place. At the 2006 World Cup, they were only defeated by Brazil in the final. In 2010 things went worse with 13th place. At the 2014 World Cup , the Poles won the final against Brazil and became world champions for the second time. In 2018 they managed to defend their title against the same opponent.
Olympic games
At the 1968 Games , the Poles were there for the first time and finished fifth. In 1972 in Munich , they finished ninth. In 1976 in Montreal they won the gold medal in the final against the Soviet Union. In 1980 in Moscow they reached fourth place. After a long break, they returned to the 1996 Games , but were eliminated without a win in the preliminary round. They finished the 2004 tournament in fifth place. The same result came in Beijing in 2008 after losing to Italy in the quarterfinals . In 2012 in London, the Poles were also eliminated in the quarter-finals against Russia . In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro they lost to the USA in the same round . They secured their starting place for Tokyo 2020 at an international qualifying tournament in Gdansk .
European Championship
The Poles finished sixth in their first participation in a European volleyball championship in 1950. They got the same result in 1955, 1958 and 1963. In 1967 they finished third, and four years later again sixth. From 1975 to 1983 they lost five finals in a row against the Soviet Union. In 1985 they finished fourth before missing a tournament. From 1989 to 1993 they came in seventh and in 1995 they came sixth. Then they missed two more European Championship tournaments. After three fifth places, the worst result came in eleventh place in 2007 . In the 2009 European Championship , the Polish national team won the title for the first time in the final against France . In 2011 the Poles won the bronze medal. In 2013 they were eliminated as hosts in the playoff round against Bulgaria . At the EM 2015 they had to admit defeat to Slovenia in the quarter-finals . Against the same opponent, they lost at the 2017 tournament despite home advantage in the playoff round. In 2019 they came in third place.
World cup
At the first edition of the World Cup in 1965, as hosts , the Poles only had to admit defeat to the Soviet Union in the final. Four years later they finished eighth. In 1977 and 1981 they each took fourth place. Then they were back in 2011 and lost the final against Russia. During the tournament in 2015 they were third. At the World Cup 2019 they were again in the final and this time they were defeated by Brazil.
Nations League
In the first edition of the Nations League 2018 , the Poles reached the final round, but not the semi-finals. In 2019 they won the game for third place against Brazil.
World league
The Poles took part in the World League for the first time in 1998 and improved from tenth to fifth place by 2002. After that, they finished ninth and seventh. In 2005 and 2007 they just missed a medal in fourth place, and in between there was a seventh place. In the next three years, the results with places five, nine and ten got worse. In 2011 the Poles came third. In 2012 she won the World League in the final against the USA. As the defending champion, they only came in twelfth place the next year. Then they finished eighth, fourth, fifth and eighth again in the last edition of the competition.
European League
In 2015, the reserve team played in the Europa League and reached third place.
