Volleyball world ranking
The volleyball world ranking list is a ranking list for the national teams of men and women. The members of the world association FIVB receive points according to their results in international competitions.
Scoring system
With the ranking list, which was published at the beginning of February 2020, the FIVB introduced a new rating system that should better reflect the team's current level of performance. Results since January 1, 2019 are taken into account. Individual games are considered in the following competitions. The importance of the competitions is expressed by a factor; half the value applies to qualifying matches.
- Olympic Games (50)
- World Championship (45)
- Volleyball Nations League (40)
- Challenger Cup (20)
- World Cup (35)
- European Championship and Other Continental Competitions (35)
- other tournaments recognized by the FIVB with at least four teams (10)
The respective results are compared with probabilities that an algorithm has determined based on historical results. Teams that do better than calculated win points; those who achieve worse results lose points. The greater the difference between the real and the forecast result, the more points are awarded. Teams that only take part in a few competitions slide down the ranking list.
Current ranking lists
The following tables show the best 25 nations and the positions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the current world rankings. The information in the +/- column shows the change in ranking compared to the previous edition of the world rankings.

Scoring system until the end of 2019
The number of points awarded was based on the importance of a competition until the end of 2019. More important competitions and more recent results were weighted more heavily in order to show the current performance of a team.
According to the resolution of the Board of Administration of the FIVB, the points were distributed as follows.
- Olympics results have been taken into account for four years and reduced by 25% each year. The Olympic winner received 100 points, the next-placed teams 90, 80 and 70 points. For fifth to eighth place there were 50 points each, for ninth and tenth places 30 points and for eleventh and twelfth places 20 points each.
- The results of the World Cup were also taken into account for four years with an annual reduction of 25%. The best four teams received 100 to 70 points, for fifth to twelfth place there were 62, 56, 50, 45, 40, 36, 33 and 30 points. The following teams received 25 points (13th to 16th place for women; 13th to 18th place for men) and 20 points (17th to 24th place for women; 19th to 24th place for men).
- At the World Cup , the results were taken into account for four years and reduced by 25% from the second year onwards. The best four teams received 100 to 70 points, for fifth to eighth place there were 50, 40, 30 and 25 points, for the teams in ninth to twelfth place there were five points each.
- The results of continental championships, for example a European championship , were taken into account for two years and reduced by 50% in the second year. There was no uniform scoring for this.
- The results of the World League and the World Grand Prix were taken into account for a year. The eight best teams receive 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 15 and 12 points. The other nine teams received from ten to one points, at the World Grand Prix 17th and 18th place received two points and 19th and 20th place one point.
